I have a blued 1979 Model 29 in 8 3/8" and it is perfect.... I am a fan of Stainless steel guns for hunting deer so I dont take my mint 29 out much in the woods. I am looking for another stellar 44mag to really use. :D
I see S&W has a Performance Center SS 629 Light hunter with a 7 1/2" barrel.
I have owned alot of fine pistols Anaconda, etc.. but the old M29 is the only one I kept. I have never owned a S&W performance shop gun. I really like the feel of my old 79 M29. Christmas is arround the corner.
Any input on theis gun would be great..... Click to see PC 629 Light Hunter

My brother-in-law has the 629 Stealth Hunter from the perf. center and it shoots like a laser. Having said that, for me, its a bit too long (7.5") and and heavy for my tastes. I prefer to do without the scope as I like to shoot with open sights. With that in mind, I've been extremely pleased with my 629PP with a 6.5" barrel (.5" is compensator) carried in my Guidegear bandoleer leather holster. Its perfectly balanced, lockup is tight as can be, and shoots like a laser too. Felt recoil is significantly lower for me as compared to my 6" 629 (without underlug). I was hitting the 8" gong at 100 yds. consistently the other day and I am *by no means* an accomplished long range pistol shooter.

I've included a sample target while I was first practicing my shooting at 40 yds. while resting on my knee. 3/4" was my best group that day.

Just my thoughts.

Thanks for the input. I am carrying a older 8 3/8" M29.

Its not to bad because of the non-underlug barrel. I figured the 7 1/2" wouldnt be too bad because it is a tapered underlug barrel. Does the stealth 629 have a super-smooth action?? My older M29 is smooth as glass compaired to the new 629. I also see S&W are rifeling there barrels different now. I guess it is to save some $$. This concerns me.

Sorry late in responding...

Does the stealth 629 have a super-smooth action?? My older M29 is smooth as glass compaired to the new 629.

The double action pull on the Stealth Hunter I fired was excellent after my bro-in-law sent it to the S&W Performance Center for a little tuning. But I don't know how good it compares to other's you may have fired in the past. The single action pull was good but not as good as my previous 629-3 that I had tuned by a gunsmith I know. He is currently tuning my 629PP trigger. I can't wait to get it back to try it out.

Speaking of Christmas presents, I just added a Performance Center 629 Stealth Hunter in black stainless finish to my collection...waiting on shipping and FFL transfer, can't wait to give it a workout.
Think maybe the range will be open on Xmas day ?!! ;)
All my older 29 and 629 have super trigger pulls, only one needed tuning, would suspect that the PC model being hand built and tuned should be slick right out of the box...I'll post a report after putting some rounds thru it.

Performance Center comes with all the nice touches that most people add after buying a basic model....trigger job, action work, etc. The price isn't that much more. I certainly like mine....great handgun for deer.
