Thinking about New Combined Pistol.

I'm thinking about trading in my House Gun and my Carry Gun For a Firearm that can do both. I live in an apartment by myself and don't need to leave the weapon home with the Mrs. I'm also worried about comming home from work some day and finding my weapon stolen. The weapons I have now are adiquate for thier roles, but don't transfer over well. (I.E. the .45's great at home but I can't conseal it, and I'm having second thoughts about the Tomcat.) I've had a good offer on the .45 and can probably get $650 or so trading both. S what is the best all around gun for this occasion. Other Particulars are:
I'm 5'8" 145lb.
I don't like the big, baggy, untucked, packing look.
I sleep against the common wall of my apt so shooting though the wall and hitting the neighbor by accident is not a factor.
No Fanny Packs.
I'd like the weapon to be "Defenceable" I.E. no megatricked out Laser Heatseeking Homing 35 rnd. .455 Cascul Pistols with the optional "Puree" Setting. That a Prosecuter could use to call me a Vigalantee Gun Nut.
And of course. Reliable and with good stopping power.
Maybe a Kimber Ultra Carry?

If you like single action the Kimbers are great. I would have said a Glock 30 myself. If overpenetration of those thin apartment walls is a concern, use Glasers.

You should try out a Beretta Cougar. I think the frame is perfect for going both ways and they come in 9mm, 357Sig, 40S&W, and 45ACP.

If I could only have one gun to fulfill both home and carry needs, it'd definately be a midsized gun in 9mm or .40 caliber. For light weight, I'd add that it be polymer. I am also a capacity freak, so pre-ban hi-caps must be available.

That being said, I can safely say that the Glock 19, Glock 23 and Walther P99 are probably your best bets for all around guns. With these guns, though, you'll probably need an overshirt, jacket, vest or something to keep it concealed.

If you need something smaller, you could go with a Glock 26, Glock 27 or the Kel-Tec P-11 or P-40. I like the Kel-Tecs because they are smaller, and they can be carried in an ankle holster. However, I think these are a little small for adequate house guns. Anything smaller than this and you are getting into .380s and .38's, which don't really serve well as house guns.

I agree...

Kahr. K9, K40, P9, depending on how big you want your bullet, and how much weight you wanna tote. GREAT guns, big enough for the house, small/thin enough to tote. Should run you about $550 or so for the K's, $500 for the P.

Kahr or Glock. if you can manage to conceal the Glock 30 then go with it but it seems to be pretty wide and i doubt i could conceal mine. but my G19 seems easy to conceal enough. i use my G19 for defense and there are a very wide variety of 9mm loads that work for different situations. i load mine with Speer 124gr+P Gold-Dots. I feel this is a great load for home defense and for a carry weapon. if you want less penetration you could go with a lighter load like Federal 9BPLE (115gr+P+).

Meiji-man, check the Lock&Load forum, we are going to have a Utah get-together on the 16th of next month. Thought you might be interested.

I'm not much help here, becuase my home gun and my carry gun are the same, but I'm a big dude, and carry a full size 1911.

If I couldn't conceal that I would probably look at the Ultra Carry, or the SA compact. Glock 19 or 23, HK compact, Sig 239, or Kahr.

If you have the bucks, the Kimber CDP in either size works well. I have an Ultra Elite which is basically the same pistol in the ultra carry size, "melted down" for more comfortable carry. I use a variety of holsters depending on dress, but my favorite is the the Sparks VM2, which I can wear as an iwb or tuckable. Darry Gallagher makes one called the tuckable which looks very good to me and would work equally as well. I have a Glock 36 which carrys well, but still can't find a decent holster for it. The Kahr is a quality carry. Very small package with a glocklike simplicity of operation. Now comes in polymer frame in 9mm. Do not know if it is being offered in .40sw yet. I think all of these would meet your needs.

I'm 6'4" / 180lbs (on a good day... before I got married I never made it over 170lbs)... have a Springfield Officer's w/ Galco paddle (didn't carry full time), but I'm replacing it with a SiG P245 and Sparks VM2 (CHL, here I come!).

The Springfield has been doing double-duty in the nightstand for a long time (occasionally replaced with my P226) but the preferred home-defense mechanism is the Mossberg 590 in the closet.

I looked long and hard at the Kimber CDP, but I just *love* SiGs... and the P245 will take P220 mags no problem, unlike the compact 1911 derivitives (go to Wilson, get the 7rnd mags with the extra lip made 'specially for the Officer).

If you like your existing .45, the CDP would be a good bet (feel & familiarity).

The value of my life, my Rights, and those of my family are incalculable;
your life and your Rights, should you choose to threaten mine, are worth exactly $1.79 --

Go with the Glock 30. It is a very versatile gun. With the 9 round mag, it conceals easily for me and I am 5'10" 160lbs. If you but the Glock 21 13 round mag and the Pearce grip filler, you have an almost full-sized .45 for the home. Very accurate, ultra reliable, 2 guns for 1. Good luck.
