Thinking about carry and range use

I got to thinking today about my carry pistol to be.

Once It does become my carry weapon, with my current shooting schedule, I would be loading and unloading a lot of carry ammo.

Every two weeks, my brother and I go shooting with our rifles and pistols. and having to unload before going into the range would mean having to unload and reload my carry ammo every time we arrive and leave the range. I don't really want to do this, because of bullet set-back.

so I came up with an idea...

Get a second pistol to be used at the range, while my HK45 stays nice and snug in it's holster. Of course, it would see occasional use, not nearly as much as it does now. Perhaps every 5th or 6th trip to the range, my Hk would be used, cycling through one magazine of carry ammo, and moving onto the next.

The problem comes in with selecting an second pistol for range use. I'm looking intently towards a Ruger GP 100. Another HK is out of my budget, yet I want something that would help reinforce trigger control and help with recoil control.

Conversely, I don't want to lose any edge that I may have gained with my Hk.

So does anyone else use this kind of a plan / setup? how does it work for you? how has shooting your primary (carry weapon) been affected?
Is this a good idea or is it a bad idea? any other suggestions?

I would just get extra mags, fire the round that was in the chamber and use the carry gun at the range.

But, any excuse to get another gun will be accepted.

I take all my carry guns to the range and put a couple hundred through each. Strangely enough, the 9mm gets a fair amount of setback but the 45's in my G21SF don't see any despite multiple chamberings after the range trip.

Anothe gun isn't a bad idea; most shooters have several.

But, the more you shoot an other-than-your-carry gun, the more familiar it will feel. The less you shoot your carry gun, the less familiar it will feel.

Shoot them both as frequently as possible, and soon your hand will know which you're holding when you shoot it. Muscle memory is important, and the only way to develop and maintain it is to shoot your various firearms often.

magazines are a lot cheaper than another pistol but nothing wrong with another pistol. Keep a couple of mags with carry ammo and keep a couple for range use.

Many say that the loading and unloading of the magazine weakens the spring more than keeping the mag loaded for long period of time provided mag is not overloaded. I keep my my high cap mags a couple short just to be on the safe side but keep single stack mags full and rotate approx every 2 months.

I have multiple duplicates of everything I carry, and they get rotated, basically weekly when I shoot. A "spare" offers options, and options are good.

Before I go to the range, I usually load the "second" gun with one of my reloads, and put it in the holster. I dont like carrying a "dirty" gun, and this way, the gun in the holster is always "clean".

I use the gun that was in the holster for practice. Sometimes I shoot the ammo in the mag, sometimes I dont.

Afterwards, it gets cleaned and placed back into the rotation. This way everything gets shot and maintained on a regular basis.
