Thinking About A Springfield M1911

I have always wanted an M1911. Just for fun. My dealer has one of those Springfield "loaded" full size M1911 model PX9151L in stainless. It is a beautiful gun. I read that she is accurate and realiable. I want her.

The price? 689 bucks.

My question is? Is that a reasonable price for a new mistress? And will that new mistress perform as well as she looks?

Seriously, does any one have any experience with this pretty lady?

For the stainless, that's an OK price.

However, you can probably find a Kimber stainless for that price. Regardless of all the Kimber vs. Springfield ranting you'll hear, *very* few people will tell you that Springfield is better *for the same price*.

While it may be just a fluke...

My SA Loaded 1911 was a total POS. Failure to go fully into battery, shot 3" low at 10 meters (when it fired) and serrations that were as sharp as a razor. Go to 1911forums.com and check out the pics of the SS Loaded that broke across the slide. http://www.1911forum.com/ubb/Forum19/HTML/000533.html

I'm not going to try to say every Springfield is junk but I won't own another one.

I have the 9mm Springfield 1911 Loaded, model PX9130L. It's the same size, weight and appearance as the .45, just in 9mm. I shoot 9mm almost exclusively, but really like the 1911 design, so for me, it's a great alternative. I paid $649 for mine, but it was used. No matter, since the owner's warranty card was blank, so as far as SA is concerned, it's new.

It's my absolute favorite shooter. Mine is mildly modified w/ a modified throat, polished feedramp, feathery trigger, (>2lbs), and the barrel has been crowned. The stock Novak sights and balance help it a point naturally. I'll say this much. It's more accurate than I am. I can shoot 2-3" groups at 25yds, but in the hands of a better shooter, I'd be willing to bet 1"groups would be normal.

I like mine! I think you'll enjoy it. Good luck.

Springfield Loaded 1911s are fine pistols. They do come "sharp," though.

I'm happy with mine.

The price you quoted seems a little high. Not by much, though.

May I suggest getting a Springfield Operator and having Ned Christiansen of Michiguns Ltd. go to work on it. His work on these guns looks really nice. I have a short piece on him on my site at http://www.defensereview.com, with a link to photos.

If you were to send an Operator to Ned, I would actually have him cut the dustcover back(he has a unique way of doing this) far enough so that you can press-check the gun using the old fashioned method. This is further than he cut the duscover on the gun in the pics. To do this, you have to replace the full-length guide rod with the traditional half-length one. Cutting the dustcover back also lightens the gun.

Why would you buy a Springfield Operator and then have some hack cut the dust cover back? If you like putting your fingers in front of the muzzle you don't have to spend that kind of money to do it.

Heresy

Here's a heretical statement - If you like shooting .45 ACP, for that price, you can buy a SIG P220 that will be a lot more accurate and have a lot more modern features.

I say go for it if you want it. I have Springfields, Kimbers, and Dan Wesson. Every manufacturer can and will make a lemon from time to time.

Overall SA makes a very well made gun.

I have the 2000 model PX9151 in stainless steel. I took a file and knocked off the sharp edges and I added an adjustable long trigger...this pistol has never missed a beat right out of the box. I would not hesitate to buy Springfield again.

I can only add my name to the list of satisfied Springfield owners. I have a 2001 Loaded Stainless, a good-looking gun which is a real tackdriver to boot. Only gripes were the slightly heavy factory trigger at 7 pounds, and the two-piece extended guide rod, which I replaced with the standard plug and short rod.

Have two Springfields (a "loaded" stainless and a "armory kote" TRP) as well as a Kimber stainless custom/classic. All are excellent, full-sized 1911A1s. However, I prefer the Springfields -- particularly the TRP -- to the Kimber.
