I've wanted a lever gun for a long time. I'm looking at a marlin 336 in 35 rem but I'm hearing people say the new ones have quality control issues. Does anyone have any experience with what the issues are or when they started? For you lever gun lovers is there a different gun you'd suggest.

I would suggest a pre-2009 model. I think that means a serial number that starts with 91 or older.

Marlin 336

I have one from the early 80's in .375 Winchester & also had one in 30-30 Winchester from the 70's ; both totally reliable. as far as the new ones, I have seen the newer models @ Cowboy action shooting matches 336CB in
.45 Colt and .38-55 Winchester both with 24" barrels and neither one was tuned, they seemed to perform flawlessly. All showed acceptable accuracy
2"-4" @ 100 yards with open sights. If you just want a lever gun, Browning BLR in more modern high performance calibers or Savage model 99 in 300 savage or 303 british(used market only-reloaders delight).

I own a 2006 vintage 336W and have had no trouble whatsoever. As far as caliber, you won't go wrong with 30-30...effective, relatively cheap, and available just about every where.

You can ask you reliability question at www.marlinowners.com for more details on current production.
