Thinking about a BUG

And I like the looks of the S&W Airweight 642 in 38, and the S&W 340 Scandium in 357. This would be a pocket pistol to be carried typically in the front right pants pocket. The 357 has the obvious power edge, but.....

Any suggestions on which is better and why, or an alternate along the same lines, maybe a Taurus or?

BUG Revolver

I've got my S&W 340Sc in my pocket right now and until I read your post I forgot I had it. I am sure a situation requiring deadly force would have also refreshed my memory. My point is that it is very comfortable to carry. Why buy a .38Spl that can only be downloaded to .32mag ballistics when you can have a .357mag that can be downloaded to .38Spl or .32mag if you can't handle training with .357. I guarantee when the fecal matter impacts the rotating impeller of the air mover you will not be noticing the recoil of .357 magnums.

In a world devoid of semiautomatics, a properly set-up Webley is the ultimate full-size self-defense handgun.

I just purchased a 642 two days ago and have carried it in my pocket for the past 48 hours. I find it to be light enough for my needs, though if money were not a limiting factor I too might be temped by the even lighter scandium. When is money not a factor though? The caliber is probably sufficent since a lot of previous posters have commented on chambering their 357's with 38 +p for home or self defense. I've read follow up shots, loss of hearing and loss of night vision arguments especially considering the light weight of scandium. "Shaking hands with the devil," as one person described shooting 357 through a sc snub to be the equivalant of. I also have a taurus 605 snub in .357 and thus wanted a smaller lighter gun. I would have to recomend a taurus 85 ultralight because in terms of fit and finish it is equal to or better than my 642 at a hundred dollars less. S&W has a smoother trigger though, and it is a S&W. I'm happy with the 642.

IMHO the 642 is one of the best snubbies on the market...but if the budget permits i would grab the 340. Why? Just because. I'm not sure i'd want to touch off to many .357's in a gun that light though. I have a Charter Offduty .38 that weighs in at about 12 1/2 oz. and it's a pretty good hand full with 135 gr Gold Dots. I would imagine a 12 oz .357 would be quit a handful.

I also have to give the Taurus 85 series the nod. Years ago I had a SP101 357 Mag which was giving me trouble. I believed people who claimed Taurus guns were junk. I also listened to gun writers like Duane Thomas who say 38 snubs are useless. Then one day in 1998 I saw a guy hit clays with his 38 snub at 50 yards with no problem. It was a old Taurus 85 with wood grips. I was shocked and the fellow let me fire the gun. The very next day I went to the gun store, threw 214 dollars down and left with a blued steel 85. 4000 +P rounds later, that very gun still shoots point of aim and goes everywhere with me.

Doesn't the Taurus 85 have a hammer? I was thinking that the shrouded hammer would be better for my front pocket.

The Taurus 85 comes Blued,Stainless,Ported,Ultralite,Hammerless,Etc. Just check out their website. They have something for everyone. All are good choices.
