Thinking about a 1st revolver...

...any suggestions? I own a few semi-autos. 9mm, .40 and .45. I was going to add a 1911, but was thinking maybe getting a revolver instead. I have fired a .44 Magnum with heavy loads before...did NOT like it, so I am pretty positive any of those 454's or 500's are gonna be off the list right away. How is the recoil on a .357 compared to a .45 semi w/#16 springs? Its not that I am THAT big of a wimp, its just that I like quick follow ups and being able to still be accurate, plus...revolvers have that Cowboy feel to em.

S&W Revolver

Hello
I like my model 57. It is a .41 Magnum and has less blast and recoil than the .44. I also did not like the way a .44 mag. recoiled so swapped mine out for this. Regards, HammerIt.

I feel there is no better first revolver than a used S&W M10/M&P in 38 Special. Gradually climb up in features to a S&W M15/67. When you have the basics mastered, move up to the S&W N frame of your choice. They come in 357 Magnum, 41 Magnum, 45 Long Colt, 45 ACP and 44 Magnum.

A used S&W 4" model 10 with a thin barrel comes to mind, or a new GP100 3" (or 4"), SP101 3" too. If you want that Cowboy feel, try the Bisley Vaquero in a .357 caliber. With a .357, you can also use also .38s so you don't need to always use magnums if you don't want to. It's like you're getting two guns for the price of one - a .38 and a magnum. Something to think about:

A 357 revolver is a good one to start with. A 6" GP-100 will be an excellent specimen, but it's hard to beat the S&W 686 with same barrel length. I've never owned a Colt nor DW revolvers, but I have shot them and they are both good choices also. I love revolvers and so far I have six 6-shooters. I'm leaning on getting another one if I ever find a Bisley 5.5 SS in 45 Colt. josh

Gp100

I am little biased :D My GP100 is more accurate than I can shoot it. I also love my wife's S&W model 60 in .38sp, very accurate for a snubbie and a blast to shoot.

"...any suggestions?"

Well, I've got a 4" S&W 686 that I got a good deal on used, and I really like it. You'd also do well with a similar Ruger GP-100.

"How is the recoil on a .357 compared to a .45 semi w/#16 springs? Its not that I am THAT big of a wimp, its just that I like quick follow ups and being able to still be accurate..."

Hmm -- it isn't the same, but IMHO if you can handle the one you can handle the other, as long as the .357 Mag you are talking about isn't one of those extra light snubbies. If you have a service sized revolver, you shouldn't have any problems along those lines. Even if you do find that the recoil is uncomfortable (which I don't), you can always downsize to lighter .38 Spl +P loads -- they'll still get the job done with less flash, bang and kick, as long as what you are trying to do is "conventional" SD.

for a first revolver, I'd suggest either a GP100 or a S&W N-Frame .357. The extra weight of these models goes a long way in soaking up the recoil of the .357 (for those who are bothered by such things :D ) and .38's are real pussycats.

Thanks all...as an FYI, I am mainly interested in using the wheelie for fun, but certainly will not hesistate to take down any zombies that come pokin around my place. So, now I am off to the gunstore to take a look at what they have...seems that either a GP 100 in 4" or 6" is what I am gonna be looking for. I am very impressed with the Rugers in semi, I guess I should be equally impressed with the wheels.

Hey Top

What a WUSS you are!!!!!!!!!!!

So you wanna be a cowboy, huh??? I was a cowboy for a while, back in '02.;)

You want cowboy fun and feel. You like Rugers, then pick up a NEW Vaquero!!! And they won't hurt you like those big bad N frame .44 Mag's...:D :D

Let us know what you buy, Top...

A .357 magnum revolver loaded with magnum ammo won't allow quick follow up shots like a .45acp without quite a bit of practice.

Hey Bullrock...

Wow...didn't know that they had Cowboys back in 1702! Not everyone is a wuss, just cuz they can't handle those friggin hand cannons that you "supposedly" shoot. I was thinking maybe of getting that CZ P-01, just because you won't shut up about how great a gun it is...any direction here, young man?

Absolutely!!! Buy a CZ-P01, and then buy 2 Beretta PX4's:D :D

Kidding aside, the Cowboy SA is a FUN gun to shoot.

Then you could always buy a .44 Mag. Cannon and shoot BB's with it....44's.

GP-100 4" is a nice .357. The 3" is better (balance) if you can find one. A little better is a 686. As my 9 year old great grandson would say, "So how you bin???

Shoot Good Old gUY!!!:p

I'd suggest sticking with the 4" GP100. He's already getting a CZ P01 which will make a fine carry gun. He may as well get a revolver with adjustable sights (the 3" only comes with fixed sights) so that he could use it to hunt with if he felt so inclined.

Webley, thanks for the input. Just to be clear though, I own several semis already, I was thinking of getting the P-01 because Bullrock keeps going on and on about how great a shooter it is...I almost think that he is getting a kickback from CZ. Hunting with a pistol...now that sounds fun, although is there going to be much left of the squirrel?
Bullrock, I "bin" fine. I have kind of laid off TFL a bit...got tired of the same ol' 9mm vs .45 vs .40 vs Sharp Stick vs Hillary Clinton's face etc. Also, these crazy "Scenario" threads were absolutely KILLING me! Glad to see you still giving people a hard time on TFL though, you kinda shocked me with the Heart thing...take it easy there fella...you ain't 60 anymore! I did handle a P-01 this evening...looks and feels waaaaay better than the CZ 75B, I was biased because I really didn't like the 75B, the Wheelie gun may have to wait, while scratch my CZ itch.

My suggestion

for someone whos already shot a good bit is a GOOD 357 with 4" barrel. Smith or Ruger are top of the line.

S&W Model 19

IMHO a great first or twenty first revolver is a S&W Model 19.
Classic handgun
Never really depriciates in value
Adjustable sights
Plenty plenty sexy lookin'
38 or 357
Can be carried fairly easy with a 4" or less barrel

What more can you ask for?
