My Grandad taught my father who taught me...

1. Horses

2. Saddle and tack

3. Boots

4. Weapon

5. Yourself

I'm pretty sure my Grandad taught his granson the same way.

Wow there are a lot of answers to this. My dad hates guns and we never had a gun in the house. Both my parents are far left liberals and hate guns with a passion.

The "Four Rules"

1.All guns are always loaded.
2.Never point the gun at anything you are not willing to destroy.
3.Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target (and you have made the decision to shoot).
4.Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

When hunting, know where your muzzle is pointing, but also know where your buddy's muzzle is pointing.

Don't hunt with folks you wouldn't trust your life with - because you are.

Big bores and high velocity don't beat a gun you can make accurate shots with

Don't use your scope as binoculars, don't climb into a stand or over a fence with a loaded gun

Identify your target 100%, don't fire if there is any doubt.

More of a 'quote' from dad:

" How can you know someone is handling a weapon in an unsafe manner if you don't know how to handle it properly yourself ? "

OR another from dad:

"GUN SAFETY, the first step you WILL learn in the sport of shooting as there are NO 'do-overs' after you pull the trigger"

Dr. Strangelove, I think we may be related. My dad taught the same thing.

Another one my dad taught us along with "Identify your target 100%, don't fire if there is any doubt."

Know your backstop! If you miss the shot or the bullet passes through the target, where is it going to end up?

I have passed up a lot of small game, because they were on the wrong side of a tree or to close to something I did not want to shoot.

When I was a kid I remember sitting at the dinner table and hearing gunshots and then hearing noises coming from the roof. The old man I worked for had people shooting squirrels off of his roof.

We found a bull that had been shot. We heard, but could never confirm, the guy that did it was spotlighting deer at night.

My uncle and myself taught me just about everything I know about guns. My uncle introduced me to shooting various handguns when I was between 13 and 17. From there, I was on my own. Dad, although he was (still is) a wonderful dad, knew next to nothing about guns. I had BB guns and pellet rifles from the time i was about 12 - no real firearms until about 16 - all of this was pretty much unsupervised. Fortunately, I was always very responsible when it came to any guns - air guns or otherwise.

Some boys just gravitate to guns. I was one of them. Nothing a parent can do will stop this. I should have been better supervised.

I just spent some time deleting off topic posts in this thread.

I started at the end and workde back to the top. That's wjhen I really read the original post ... and then I saw my mistake.

Yup, not word in there about firearms. So, all those replies that were deleted for being off topic were no more off topic than the opening post. At least they were intelligible.
