They're Driving To Ohio Unarmed

Kentucky Rifle

We had dinner at my wife's parent's house last night. After dinner my wife and her mother went to the den to surf the 'net. Her father and I went to the living room to talk about guns and ammunition. He told me that they are going to drive to Ohio today to visit friends. And, Ohio, not being a "gun friendly" state, he was going unarmed. What's wrong with this picture? Two retired people who must travel unarmed. My father in law has a CCW license, (Kentucky, not acceptable in Ohio.) but was afraid that they would be stopped for some reason and a gun would be found by police. I hesitated to tell him that I would take my pistol anyway. We need a national carry law. My best friend was murdered on the road because he didn't want to break any laws by crossing state lines with his pistol. Now he's dead because of that decision.

Were trying to get a CCW in Ohio. The Republican Gov Taft Has waffled on his promise to pass one.

The real crime is when mandatorily disarmed people such as your in laws become victims of crime, the cry is for even harsher gun control.

Jack,
Yeah. That's a real "catch-22".
They probably will have an uneventful little trip. However, it's a shame these people, who never would think about breaking a law are forced to travel unprotected from the preditors who we all know are out there.
That reminds me of another thing. I've noticed this more and more on the highways between cities around here. A car breaks down, the owner goes to find a phone, the car windows are smashed. I guess by thieves, but sometimes it looks like just plain old vandalism. Anybody noticed anything like this?

WLM...

Tell them to take the gun... When they get into an unfriendly state, you simply lock up the "security blanket" in a locked hardside case, unloaded in the trunk, if necessary.

Even if they were stopped, unless there is probable cause to search, the gun in a locked case should be safe. Me, I wouldn't keep it loaded, less hassles in the long run, but with a 1911, just having the mag in the case with the gun would be effective... Only takes a sec to pop the case, and insert the mag... ;)

Just be careful, Jaydee. That would be illegal in Illinois. The law says it has to be unloaded, in the case, with no ammo in the case with it. Unfortunately, most police believe that it says something about not having the ammo anyplace that you could reach both, and not on your person. This is not true but you still get arrested. Most, including the state police, also believe the law requires you to put the gun in the trunk or someplace where you can't get to it.
It doesn't have to be the real law for some cop to ruin your year. It has happened here and it will again. I don't mean to be long-winded but I gave some foolhardy advice to someone on this subject a little while ago and I don't want to do it again.

We already have a national law... it's called the 2nd Amendment.

Although there may be some distasteful steps to get back to it...

I understand the law IS the law.

But an unloaded firearm in a case inside a locked trunk is not doing anyone any good, except the BG...

There just has to be a better way!

...defend the 2nd., it protects us all.

First of all, welcome to TFL, Nukem. It's good to have another Buckeye here. :)

The law in Ohio states that you can have a gun in a case, a box, or in plain sight in the car with you, but it must be unloaded and you must have the ammo stored where you would have to leave the passenger compartment to get it. This effectively reduces the self-defense capabilities of a firearm to that of a rock or a hammer.

It's great to talk the talk about ignoring immoral, unethical and stupid laws like we admittedly have in Ohio concerning guns. Unfortunately, walking the walk is quite a different thing. For me, it is tough to choose between walking around unarmed (as I have all my life), and walking around armed and risk going to jail for a long time. I have a family to consider that depends on me. I know the old arguement that my family would rather have me in jail than in a cemetery, but it isn't as simple as that when it comes time to decide.

Technically, open carry is legal in most of Ohio, but not in a vehicle. Also, there is a statute against inciting panic, which is exactly what you would do if you carried openly in most parts of the state.

Think about these things. What would you do?

Concealed Carry is illegal in Ohio.

Here's my solution. Dillion Precision has a nifty little concealed carry thingy that from outer appearances is just a day runner. When opened, instead of calendars, and phone numbers, there is a holster, and a place for a magazine. I too ignore unjust laws, and carry. I been meanin' to take one of those concealed carry classes, but for 90 bucks, I'll have to wait. I still won't get a license though. It's a principle thing for me. The class would probably be worthwhile though. Whatever you do, carry. It is better to explain it to the cops (it's possible, and I have had to do this) then to end up in a morgue because you were being a good boy.

Unfortunately, in Florida concealed carry w/o a CCW is a felony with a minimum of one year in the slammer. Open carry is illegal too, unless you are on private property.

Thankfully, we don't have a mandated FOID or any of that nonsense and loaded car carry is legal. You just have to have the gun holstered or in a container (glovebox, etc).
