" Now even though Jeffers misspelled "conservatism" on his look up if you are incensed as I am please call 210-832-9022 and Mr. Daniel Fierro, the owner of Dictionary.com. " http://dickmcdonald.blogspot.com/

It's a slightly different outcome when "conservative" is the main entry, rather than bigotry. Just for fun, I ran a search with "hippie" and found one that paints liberals as the crazy ones:

---------------
"Main Entry: sectarian
Part of Speech: noun
Definition: fanatic
Synonyms: adherent, bigot, cohort, disciple, dissenter, dissident, dogmatist, extremist, fanatic, henchman, heretic, hippie, liberal, maverick, misbeliever, nonconformist, partisan, radical, rebel, revolutionary, satellite, schismatic, separatist, skeptic, supporter, true believer, zealot

-------------

But since liberal and conservativism aren't the main entries in either of those, they really can't be used to describe one's political party.

I did a search for conservative and found something more reasonable, and conservative is the main entry in this one:

-----------
"Main Entry: conservative
Part of Speech: adjective
Definition: moderate
Synonyms: bourgeois, cautious, constant, controlled, conventional, die-hard, fearful, firm, fogyish, fuddy-duddy, guarded, hard hat, hidebound, holding to, illiberal, inflexible, middle-of-the-road, not extreme, obstinate, old guard, old-line, orthodox, quiet, red-neck, right, right-wing, sober, stable, steady, timid, traditional, traditionalistic, unchangeable, unchanging, uncreative, undaring, unimaginative, unprogressive, white bread
Antonyms: incautious, left-wing, liberal, progressive, radical, revolutionary

---------

That is much more reasonable, ignoring "red-neck", "uncreative" and "unimaginative". It doesn't make us conservatives look as bad as putting us with "bigotry", anyways.

There certainly will be a difference, though, if you are looking at main word "liberal" to describe liberals and main word "bigotry" to describe conservatives.

Even with using the correct main word, though, it still looks as if www.dictionary.com leans a bit left.

you have to be joking, right? that's what those words mean in the english language. no two ways about it. now the fact that they're applied to political parties doesn't mean a thing in regards to the definition

Liberals aren't truly "liberal", otherwise they wouldn't want to limit select freedoms.

Conservatives aren't truly "conservative" because they (and liberals too) love to spend tax dollars on useless, retarded projects.

Just because you don't like the meanings of the real words doesn't mean you have a foot to stand on in thinking that the english language should be changed simply because you're a republican.

Oh, and maybe you're getting your panties in a wad because you don't understand that conservatism and conservativism are two different words.

They're synonyms meaning they have very similar meanings but are still given two distinct definitions. By the way guys, a thesaurus is a work containing said synonyms as well as many others. A thesaurus is not claiming that the word "redneck" and "conservative" carry the same meaning, only that they can often be used in the same context and that the general english speaking population considers them similar.

Y'all are too bent up over the "left leaning" this or that.

Relax, redworm. All I was saying is that you can't use synonyms of a main word "bigotry" to describe conservatives, while using synonyms of a main word "liberal" to describe liberals.

The info is misleading when it says "1 entry for conservativism" and lists all these bad qualities.

Yea, "liberal" and "conservative" are words separate from politics, but used in politics, and that's because they are correct, for the most part. I'm not trying to say that both groups stick solidly to these definitions. Just pointing out why a search on conservativism (syn: conservatism) returned so many negative results.

That's my point. To think that the website is left leaning simply because it describes the english language is it's understood is a bit silly. It pointed out negative results because that's the meaning of the word. The very definition of liberal is basically "open minded". The very definition of conservative denotes that one prefers traditional values which is a bad thing as often as a good thing. Family, honesty, and loyalty are all traditional values but so are slavery, mysoginy, and racism.

Of course I'm not saying that republicans are racist but I really don't see the point in pitching a conniption over the definition of a word. Hey, it's no worse than when hard nosed right wingers toss out the term "liberal" and "hippy" as if they think it's a genuine insult.

Did they change it already? I tried to look up "conservativism," and it doesn't seem to exist in the thesaurus. The dictionary points to "conservatism."

It wasn't there as a main word before, but did come up under main word "bigotry" earlier. Point noted on how words are words with many definitions and synonyms, but I guess they got so many complaints about this one that they changed it.

Earlier today, bigotry came up as listed in the first post. Now...

Looks like they pulled out "conservativism" from the synonym list.
