The yearly, "What to buy myself for Christmas" quandry,,,

It's upon me again,,,
My decision time for a Self-Santa gift.

For the better part of a year I have been trying to find a 4" Rossi Plinker revolver,,,
It seems that when Rossi sold the last run of them,,,
They haven't made any more since.

I like pairing up rifles and handguns.

For example I have a Henry Acu-Bolt rifle and a Charter Arms Pathfinder,,,
Both are quality American guns made of stainless steel,,,
They look very nice together in their common case.

I have a 60's vintage Mossberg 320 .22 single-shot rifle,,,
I have it encased with a 60's vintage H&R 929 .22 revolver,,,
They also match each other well in heritage, style, and overall quality.

I paired my excellent Mossberg 702 Plinkster "Appleseed Rifle",,,
With a Smith & Wesson 22A semi-auto .22 pistol,,,
This pairing pleases my sense of style nicely,,,
Different origins but a similar high quality.

I wanted the 4" Rossi Plinkster revolver to pair with my Savage Mk-IIF rifle,,,
Both of them are blue steel and would pair together nicely,,,
But after almost a year looking for one of them,,,
I've finally given up on finding one.

It seems that when Rossi sold the last run of them,,,
They haven't made any more since then,,,
Perhaps it was the Taurus buyout.

Anyways, Now I'm trying to decide what handgun to pair with my Savage rifle,,,
I have always paired revolvers with bolt rifles and semi's with semi's,,,
But that really narrows down the available choices for me.

I finally got to handle an Alfa Proj revolver imported by Czech-Point,,,
But to tell the truth I simply wasn't impressed by the gun,,,
It didn't make me smile at all when I handled it.

A Taurus 94 would work but I'm leery of any new Taurus revolvers,,,
I've owned a new 970 Tracker and a new 990 Tracker,,,
Both of those handguns were true dogs.

Now, if I wanted to spend a ton of cash on it,,,
I would find a used S&W model 17,,,
But if I were to buy one of them,,,
I would pair it with the CZ-452. :p

Anyways, now I'm considering a Ruger MK-III pistol instead,,,
A 6" Standard with the skinny barrel would compliment the Savage nicely,,,
They are both blue steel, American made, and the quality of the guns are comparable.

But one is a bolt-action and the other a semi-automatic,,,
That would be like cats and dogs living together in harmony.

Oh the decisions one has to make in this hobby.

One of my friends has been laughing at my dilemma,,,
He keeps saying, "You have a great little Rossi 511 revolver.",,,
"Why don't you pair the Savage with that handgun and be done with it?"

I answer, "Because it's stainless and the rifle is blue.",,,
My sense of aesthetics may be getting in the way of practicality.

Anyways, here I sit with $450.00 in my "new gun fund" account,,,
And absolutely no firm idea on what to get with it.

Any ideas on a new revolver that I don't know of,,,
Or should I throw aesthetics out the window,,,
And just buy the standard Ruger MK-III?

I am struggling to decide which black powder single shot "old west" style rifle I'll get.

It will probably be a Remington Rolling Block clone in .30-30 Win, at least I think it will!! CAN'T DECIDE!!!!

Hello Model12Win,,,

Hello Model12Win,,,
Who makes the clones you are considering?

Single-shot rifles are very appealing to me,,,
I own 13 rifles in all with six being single-shots,,,
And three that are mag fed but with single-shot adaptors.

I do like your "pairings" when it comes to firearms. If Ruger would wake up, and offer the new Charger takedown in a stainless/synthetic version to match my 10-22 takedown I would be on it immediately. Thay are starting to come around with a blued/synthetic, but I'm holding out for stainless.

I'm having the same problem trying to figure out what to buy for myself. I'll let you know in a couple days when I go to the fun store.

Well, you should buy whatever you want....

but a Mark III would not be at the top of my list...over most any other .22 out there - like one of the Buckmark models.../ and I'm seeing a lot more S&W model 17's and 18's around lately ( .22's ) - but $450 might be tough on a S&W...but personally I like the model 18's ( 4" guns) a lot...

but personally I'd suggest you look into some reloading equipment as much as you like shooting...Dillon SDB is a good press for the money for handgun ammo / or even a Dillon 650 ...and then you can add accessories like case feeder, etc down the road.../ but its your money buddy, do whatever the heck you want :D

I just bought a sweet old pinned and recessed Smith model 19. Merry Christmas to me! :D oh and did I mention it was only 400 bucks!

Aaron,

Gunbroker frequently has Rossi 22 LR revolvers. I contemplated buying one till I did some research on the web on them. Seems they are not reliable and repair parts are impossible to find.

I bought a K-22 S&W instead and couldn't be happier. Smoothest DA & SA trigger I've seen.

I haven't decided as yet,,,

I haven't made up my mind as yet,,,
But I'm still leaning towards the standard Mk-III.

I have a Ruger 22/45, S&W 2A, Beretta NEOS, and Buckmark Hunter,,,
Of what is often considered the "best five .22 pistols",,,
The Mk-III is the one I don't have as yet.

I do check Gunbroker regularly,,,
A week back there was a NIB 4" version,,,
But from the pictures it really looked like it was used.

So I passed on it,,,
That might have been a mistake.

I'm in no huge rush though,,,
The skill of patience is slowly growing on me.

Kinda like moss. :p

I have been writing to Santa every year for a 5 shot 44 special Ruger SP. One of these years its going to be in my stocking. This year I think (know) that Santa (wife) is getting me an RCBS combo charge master.:D

Are you limiting yourself to new guns?
A MK II is almost universally considered a marginally better firearm than a MK III. I've only fired a few of each, but the MK IIs were noticeably smoother. They were also older and probably with a lot more rounds down the tube, so maybe they were just smoothed out.

What about a single six, SP101 in 22lr, or a bearcat? The blue Bearcat is at buds for $446 as I write this, a single-six for $435, and the SP101 at $529, but probably available within your budget slightly used.

Hello johnwilliamson062,,,

Are you limiting yourself to new guns?

Well, in a way I sorta am,,,
How's that for "waffling" around the bush? :p

I've bought many used gun in recent years,,,
I really don't have a problem with them,,,
I only doubt my ability to test them.

I'm fairly confident in checking out a revolver,,,
But I have no idea how to check out a used semi-auto.

No more single-action guns for me though,,,
I have several that I hardly ever take to the range.

Now if I could find one of the older style SP-101 pistols,,,
The one with the dismally small front sight,,,
I would snag it if the price was right.

I had one years ago and loved the little gun,,,
But they are scarce as hen's teeth,,,
And command a fierce price.

The newer SP-101 is a fine handgun for certain,,,
But it is a bit out of what I want to spend on this pairing.

I've always thought that revolver would pair well with a Ruger American Rimfire,,,
I mean they have the same heritage and would make a great set.

Perhaps next year or that one.
