I don't know how many folks have played around with this before, but I just had my first go with Google Earth. It is just a stunning application!

Satellite imagery of, well, the entire earth (or Geopolitical globe, my moderator ;) ), is in there. You can rotate the earth in 3D to bring up the continent you like, then zoom with the thumbwheel of your mouse to see, depending on the particular location... right down to individual cars! Just mind boggling, and truly fascinating. They have layers for roads, and other mapping info...

The app may be downloaded for free at:
http://earth.google.com/

Whether you want to see the Kremlin, the White House, or your house, odds are, it's in there.

+1 BIG time!! One of the most amazing programs / sites I have ever seen! On some areas (those with aerial photos rather than satellite imagery), you hunters can damned near see those deer walking around (And I'm not joking! Cars on roads & parking lots are plainly visible!). A word of advice though, check the computer requirements to run this thing before you download it. It takes a pretty hefty and speedy computer to handle it. Good call, CC, and welcome back! :)

Yeah I used something similar awhile back called Microsoft Terra Something or another. Got the GOD's eye view of the area I live in, only the latest Divine Recon shot was from 2003, nothing really current. There was some news program awhile back on these types of programs and that the DOD hates it, for obvious reasons.

That's Terra Server Silent, but Google Earth is light years above that!

Hmm... well then maybe I'll give in a look see then. I wasn't too impressed with TSS in all honesty, I mean almost none of it was current Orbital Recon Shots of anything I'd find interesting to look at. I guess I can see where the DOD would have sand in the vagina over this being a possibly misused circumvention siphon for low-end Intelligence approximation, but unless that eye in the sky is scanning the whole globe constantly I don't see how it could really be of any use to anyone other than the curious. That TSS thing didn't even have current shots of a friend's housing area because it was only built (sub division) a year ago, and the latest they had dated back to 1998! LOL!

...I'll have to check out GOOGLE EARTH now.

it is a very cool tool. I can find and pick out all the houses i have lived at over the years. fun program to goof around on.

Well, I am not sure how useful this would be for watching actual troop/equipment movements, because nothing is dated, and I would guess that different portions are actually imaged on different dates and all stitched together. It's not made for military use.

Just as a point of interest, though, I can clearly see, for example, 4 US helicopters parked out across the street from the former Republican Guard Palace in downtown Baghdad. Who knows when they were there.

Google Earth is ok but I only wish they covered a wider area. Everywhere I want to vacations hard to see  .

I want to go on a vacation sitting here in my chair.

The pictures are extrememly dated, not at all current.

The image of my mother's property shows a building that stood for about ten years and was torn down about two years ago.

My ex wifes house shows a tree that was destroyed in last years storms.

The image of my house does not show the truck on the side of the yard that has sat in the same spot for almost a year.
It's only driven on weekends and is always parked in the same place when not in use, so no bubba bashing.
