The "War on Terror" - is it real?

I have a question... ever since 9/11/01 the Bush administration has justified spying on it's own innocent citizens and invading Iraq by saying it's part of the "War on Terror". How can we possibly take this seriously when our own borders here at home are not secure? Wouldn't it be rather easy for a "terrorist" to sneak across and cause harm to us?

I am beginning to think that this whole "War on Terror" is a sham. It seems more like a red scare or a witch hunt than anything. IMO - until they secure/militarize our borders then we are NOT SAFE. Being in Iraq does NOT make us safer. It's all lies, but that's just my opinion on things. It's more about making money and taking our personal rights away.

Tommy Franks said:
“It means the potential of a weapon of mass destruction and a terrorist, massive, casualty-producing event somewhere in the Western world – it may be in the United States of America – (an attack) that causes our population to question our own Constitution and to begin to militarize our country in order to avoid a repeat of another mass, casualty-producing event. Which in fact, then begins to unravel the fabric of our Constitution." - Tommy Franks

Thanks for reading.

While there have been some "close calls" as of late, as of today there has been no major terrorist attack on the US since 9/11. Yes, the few plots covered by the media that were recently made public may be considered close calls, but they never even remotely made it to fruition. I call that good police work.

Do not be mislead. There is most definitely a war on terrorism going on right now and we are fighting it with our brains, our blood, and our nation's God-given resources. Rejoice in the fact that you are not taking up arms to protect your street, your town, or your state from an enemy who has openly, repeatedly, and publicly stated that he would like nothing more than to strike you dead simply because you are American.

However, I am opposed to the Patriot Act as it stands right now because I personally feel that it simply flies in the face of what the framers of The Bill Of Rights and The Constitution had in mind when they created them. I believe that in it's current form, the Patriot Act endangers our personal rights more than it protects us from terrorism.

But I firmly believe that there is a war on terrorism and that we as a nation are currently engaged in the prosecution of it on THEIR shores, which is better than fighting it on our streets here.

did you read about how U.S. "Security Agents" were caught trying to sneak explosives into the G8 Summit??
Why would they do that??

Sources told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa that US security men tested German security by trying to smuggle C4 plastic explosive past a checkpoint at Heiligendamm.

Terrorism has been around since the dawn of civilization. Anyone who thinks they can use military might to defeat it is WRONG - especially when our own front door is unlocked (our borders). The Bush administration has grossly overexagerated terrorism to their own benefit. It's sickening. There is a good chance that they LET 9/11 happen because they knew they could justify EVERYTHING as a result.

The "War" on terror is about as good as the "War" on drugs. Sounds lie another War we will lose because of PC and the associated American BS

Ruger - exactly and they are spending billions of our tax dollars on this nonsense. what is this world coming to? God have mercy on us all.

Please tell me one hardship you have experienced because of the war on terror Egoprofit, have your taxes went up ?

There is no "war" on terror. Never has been.

Likewise, there is no "war" on drugs or crime. Never was.

The word "war" is highly misused nowadays...along with the word "hero." You can also add the words "American" and "Christian" as being misused/abused. All these are misdefined/watered-down and don't AT ALL mean what they used to mean. Sort of like "citizenship" and what that means nowadays (nothing much).

Pages from the new Clinton Dictionary perhaps?

hardships? this isn't about "hardships" - this is about the loss of personal rights in the name of "security".
I've never claimed to yet experience direct "hardships" as a result, but I can see our country falling away from what it was founded on.

Here's a few things that bother me though...

1) Witnessing the loss of habeus corpus and the reconsideration of our founding principals
2) Witnessing the invading of a country that has arguably little to do with our own security?
3) Witnessing my best friend be shipped off to Iraq to "fight" when he himself doesn't understand WHY we are still there.
4) Witnessing the FBI "Terror Watch List" be called "out of control" by investigators as it reaches over 500,000+ names - many of which could be innocent citizens that have not commited a crime:

http://blogs.abcnews.com/theblotter/2007/06/fbi_terror_watc.html

Is this still America? Has Bush truly ruined what we know as America? Bush is completley un-American. He has zero respect for our constitution.

Your are kidding, right?...what then is the definition of war? Tell me the correct definition of war that you claim is being misused.

Our founding principals ? No more or no less than before the war.

We invade countries that harbor terrorist we seek.

Your best friend is a volunteer, He needs to follow orders. Nobody in the chain of command cares if he understands WHY, But I bet when he enlisted he understood why he was doing it.

500,000 what percentage of our population is that ?

3) Witnessing my best friend be shipped off to Iraq to "fight" when he himself doesn't understand WHY we are still there.

Egoprofit, it's not his place to ask.

If he had a problem with that, he should not have signed up. The government owns him for the duration of his service. He HAS no rights. That's how a military has to operate to be effective.

If they tell him "You are going to Iraq" or "You are going to Germany" or "You are going to Zimbabwe", he cannot ask "why", the only acceptable response is "Yes, SIR!".

Anyone who can't deal with that should not have signed up. And if they can't deal after, tough.

egoprofit, since you say your friend doesn't seem to know why he is there, are you claiming to know why we are really over there?

If you so, tell us what you know.

Alarming that you cant tell the difference.
Very alarming indeed. Stuff like this is what scares me; some Americans are so blind that they will accept ANYTHING as "terrorism".

We invade countries that harbor terrorist we seek.
That’s correct, but uhm… isn’t it hard to fight an enemy that doesn’t even have a flag? I thought we were in Afghanistan to fight the Taliban – what is in Iraq? Also do you realize that the USA themselves support a terrorist group known for attacking Iran? A bit hypocritical, eh?

(don’t believe me? Read it here: http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/meast/04/05/protected.terrorists/index.html)

Sorry, but I doubt even Bush himself can give a realistic answer to that question.
At this point it seems our troops are there to govern a civil war. You absolutely cannot justify the current activity in Iraq war as a “homeland security issue” when our own borders here at home are not secure. We have bigger fish to fry. We are wasting BILLIONS of tax dollars trying to rebuild another country when there are countless potholes within 300 feet of my house.

Call me crazy, but I don’t like seeing my tax dollars wasted on multi million dollar construction nightmares :)

Bush - can you please fix those potholes? I mean.. do I not pay enough taxes?
Also, with all the money we are spending in Iraq we could probably put "nuke sniffing" equipment at every major port in our country. That, in my opinion, would be A HELLUVALOT more effective at protecting Americans!!!!!!!

Testing security (even with explosives) is rather commonplace, and has no connection to any conspiracy to foster a fake "War on Terror." It was done long before 9/11, including a famous episode where Red Cell (the Navy unit tasked with testing security) parked a truck filled with explosives near a runway that Air Force One was using.

As for why we are in Iraq, our intel system screwed up. Hussein wanted everyone to believe he had WMD (and apparently his own people convinced them he still had them) and everyone believed him. This isn't the first time bad intel has led to a bad situation and it won't be the last.

no problem. so now to correct the mistakes - get the FC*CK out and hold responsibile the very people who sold false intel on this war. they knew the nigerian claim was false way before it was presented as intel. find the source - and fire them.

secondly - stop war mongering with Iran. Iran is no immediate threat to us at all.
the American people do not support the current war and much less another one.

and let me say again - it is NOT POSSIBLE to justify a war in the name of security when our own borders are not secure. it's absolutely absurd to continue selling this war to people based on fear. we are absolutely no more secure than before we went to iraq.

Thanks for your input everyone, I enjoy this forum already :)

"American people do not support the current war and much less another one. "

How many American people do you speak for ?

"it is NOT POSSIBLE to justify a war in the name of security "

What better reason than the security of our citizens ?
