Its a sleeper that is not well known, but the ultimate bear stopper is the mighty .22 short.

There are several options for outdoor carry guns in this caliber. In the lower 48 except for Wyoming and Montana Grizzly country I usually carry this monster:

When in Alaska where the big boys roam I switch over to this beast:

The 4" barrel lets the round build up more velocity to really stop the bears cold.

And no there is no punchline here to use one of these on you hunting partner's leg :p

is this for realz?

But the bear came much too close, and when the big boar was only a few yards away, Bella Twin shot him in the side of the head with a .22 Long cartridge. The bear dropped, kicked and then lay still. Taking no chances, Bella went up close and fired all of the cartridges she had, seven or eight .22 Longs, into the bear’s head. That bear, killed in 1953, was the world-record grizzly for several years

Your first picture is just about how big my six .44 cartridges felt like in my revolver in hand during my closest non-hunting bear encounter at four feet!

At that distance anything short of a flamethrower is going to feel really small.

You know the .22 short might just work...is that you who was up here during the Winter... because during the Winter it seems to have chased all of them away up here.. OK, most of them for most of the Winter...

You've outed me.... While talking a little stroll in the Smokies the female that was with me asked if I had a gun handy that could handle those terrible bears and I replied yes and pulled out my NAA .22lr. She laughed I said don't worry if a bear comes calling your getting knee capped:eek:..... :mad:she didn't find that funny:mad: oh well...

Use What You Like.

You can keep relying on the .22LR, but I'll keep carrying my .357sig & 45 Super in bear country. I'm not saying .22 won't work, but what are the chances that it will? I read a story once where a bear was taken down by being shot in the eye by a .22, but that's a 1 in a 1,000 chance I'm not willing to take. Heck, even if you can't kill it with a .22 round maybe you'll get lucky and the bear will choke to death on the pistol while he's eating you. ;)

I've heard of elephants being taken out with a .22, but where the game can eat you who'd be nuts enough to take that chance.

Many years ago a friend of mine while hunting for bear with someone else saw his companion shoot a bear with a .338 3 times as it kept walking along towards a stream and it only made a low grunting sound at each shot. My friend finished it by blowing off it's jaw with a .44 mag.

In the woods I've always carried my 45LC and only went for bear on a few occassions without seeing one. I would only carry along my .375 H&H, but where bears are concerned you must expect the unexpected.

Bigger the better, I had read of Bella killing a record grizzly with a .22 short back then on a magazine several years a go... amezing storys....and unbelievably lucky!!!

I think the .22 post was intended to promote shooting your companion in the leg as a sacrifice, then run like hell! Otherwise, why not a good slingshot?

As I 'suggested' on another forum...

Remington 7400 Carbine in .30-06 with 220gr ammo...

Or...

For those that do not trust a 'semi', go with the same barrel and caliber in a 7600 pump...

Flame away...

Odd how so few can recognise sarcasm in print, unless specifically pointed out.

If you seriously put your faith in a .22 short to stop an attacking bear before you come to grief, go right ahead. Natural selection at work.

Some of us get jokes...

:D

While I think the premise was amusing, I'm not sure enough recognize the intent, so I'm going to close this one before it gets ugly.
