The Truth About Guns 1911 Gripwrench review

It's a solution to a problem that should not exist. If a barrel bushing is so tight that a standard Brownells nylon bushing wrench won't turn it -- have the bushing re-fitted, or sell the gun. The 1911 barrel bushing is not supposed to be (and doesn't need to be) an interference fit or a press fit.

A PROPERLY set up 1911 does not need a wrench. However, a cpl makers delight in making the guns SUPER tight. Les Baer is one. Its hard to even open the slide on them when new. Like you think its been super glued shut:eek:

They do shoot EXTREMELY well, though.

For a fighting gun shooting a man size target in the chest at 25 yards it does not need to be tight enough to need a wrench, for cutting X's at 50 yards it better be tight and will need a wrench.

A wrench, yes, but not a four-foot wrench, a 3-pound hammer, and an 800-pound gorilla.

I once had the (mis)fortune of testing a 1911 from a "famous maker" whom I won't name. My shooting partner that day was a former Marine. He's not a wimp, and back then I wasn't, either. Using a steel bushing wrench, with one man holding the pistol in two hands and the other using two hands on the wrench, we could NOT make the barrel bushing move.

They do NOT need to be that tight.

For what it's worth, BTW, that fancy, high-priced pistol shot worse than several under-$1,000 Colts I've shot -- and my shooting partner couldn't make it shoot any better than I could, so it wasn't just me having a bad day. How bad? How's about struggling to get groups smaller than 3 inches, and 25 yards.

Its not a problem for me. It was fitted that way as requested. I want to know there is no play in my barrell/bushing/slide so any error is me and not the gun. It is strictly a range gun. I believe your opinions are based in the service pistol world. You should call Les Baer and tell them they are fitting them wrong asap :) QUOTE]It's a solution to a problem that should not exist. If you don't know the trick of taking a Gold cup apart one might be needed since it has the tapered barrel and the fingered barrel bushing. All that's really needed is to push back on the slide so that the fingers loosen around the barrel then rotate. I wont use a wrench because of the possibility of scratching the front face of the slide.

My Dan Wesson needs a wrench and a 2nd person to hold the pistol  My Colts don't. Guess what get shot and cleaned more .
