The Taurus Alternative?

Looking around at my local gunshop, I looked at some of Taurus's new Titanium line.
Considering that I won't buy from S&W, and I'm looking for a CCW piece with a 2" barrel, the 617T looks to be the perfect choice for me.
Only one problem, well a couple:
1. Don't like the "Ribber" grip's, does anyone know if they can be replaced by something else? No averse to rubber, its just they rub me the wrong way.
2. Seven rounds of .38/.357, how easy/hard is it to get speedloaders for this pistol?

Thanks for any information,

Jon

Thanks for the info Frontsite!, I'll see if I can "finagle" a friend of mine to test out the grips (he works at a gunstore). Unfortunately this particular flavor of Taurus is not in th rental case. :(
Just figured in "deep carry" mode either deep down in a IWB, or an ankle holster all those rubber grooves would attract dust, dirt and lint like nobody's business.

Croc,
The Ti Taurus is a good choice. I would give those Ribber grips a chance. They were designed to be used in conjunction with the ported barrel. The grip/porting combo forms a recoil reduction system. Take away one component, and it does not work. I understand that it works quite well.

I hope that friend of yours has a strong wrist and a taste for discomfort. ;) The guns sell too well to stick one in the rental case. But don't worry, I'll shoot one eventually.

Aftermarket hard rubber or wood grips are available for it. It's the Taurus version of the K-frame round butt. Recoil will be rough with anything that exposes the backstrap but the gun would look real nice with the bright bue finish and a set of rosewood grips.

BTW, expect a price increase on Taurus guns of anywhere from 5-11% in the near future.

Recoil in the 617-T is not that bad at all. My mom uses .38 +p's in hers, though. I shot it with hot .357's and I loved it. Sure, it's still a .357, but it's not that bad if you know how to shoot heavy calibers.

Used as designed the recoil shouldn't be too bad. But switching the soft rubber grips for something harder that exposes the backstrap will make it more uncomfortable to shoot. It won't tear limbs off or anything but it will definitely be a distraction during shooting.

O.K., O.K. I get it...Try out the damn gun with the grips FIRST than see how I like it.
I should realize that "astetically" pleasing is no longer the rule of the day. (Hehehe...I own Glocks, why should I be so picky!)
Just reminds me of the book "Green Eggs and Ham"...

"I will not shoot it at a boot, I will not shoot it eating fruit, I will not shoot it Sam I am, take your gun, don't give a damn!"
Of course I'm sure this will change when I give the pistol a chance! :D

I want one too. The only revolver I have is a DanWesson 15 357mag snubby. Actually it's my wife's. If she can have one then I shall too...I was drooling over the 617ti the other day as well as the 45 coltlc snubby. I don't think that one is all titanium but I could be wrong. It's light too.

Taurus sells the .45 LC revolvers in both steel and titanium. The price difference is about $150. The recoil difference; who knows?

As I said before, I have the Titanium in .45 Colt, and I promise you, for a man, it's completely manageable. Many women would not like it. I love it.

I am with fronsight with regards to the grip. Those ribs really make a difference even though they do feel a little strang at first.

I have both the 44spl ti and 38 UL ti, and both have very manageable recoil. I also like the ribber grips on the 44, as they are comfortable and absorb some of the recoil shock. Both are accurate, with a little practice.

You got it! Give the ribbers a chance. I've got the .45LC total titanium and it is a champ. The recoil is very manageable. However, I didn't shoot it with HOT loads. If you do any reloading you can probably get some nice shooting, low recoiling loads for it.

Mine is for CCW so the accuracy is more than acceptable and the recoil is not even felt in a "hot" situation. At least the first shot. ;)

I would take a Taurus. They are well made. From what I have heard good, accurate, I would get one in stead of a Smith. I am talking about new, of coarse.
