What is the purpose of the tactical roll? Is it ever actually used?

It makes for a good youtube video, but is it ever actually placed into practice? Has anyone shot a few rounds, rolled on the ground and then shot a few more?

I see no purpose behind this besides looking good on a training ground. It does look good though on camera with you charging at the target shooting off a few rounds and then rolling on the ground like you are Starskie and Hutch.

Watched a dumb kid on a youtube video discharge the firearm accidentily while trying to pull off this manuvere and almost shot himself. Diving for cover maybe but I see no advantage in this type of manuvere since you can not fire while doing it only after, and while you are regaining your site picture your adversary already has his. just my opinion and your results may vary

Best I can tell, the point is to convince gullible students that they're learning some way cool, bitchin' technique and haven't really wasted thousands of dollars. Looks like a great way to get shot, if you ask me.

That has to be the dumbest, most useless thing I've seen someone do while holding a gun so far this week.

It's still early on Sunday, though, and the intarw3bz are a big place...

I've seen this roll performed on television, for example, by the Los Angeles SWAT during a training drill where they are charging the target...fire a few rounds then "roll" then fire a few more rounds. I've seen it quite a bit and its done especially when there are television cameras around.

Im not certain when I would use it. I thought we were supposed to hide behind cover not charge the target out in the open taking evasive manuevers on the ground while rolling.

I think there is another point behind this like diving behind make believe cover or simulating falling on the ground while running to the next target. Thats the reason for my post to figure out why.

Tactical roll? Here you go!
Quick and dirty, just the way you like it!

It was used extensively by Corporal Audie Murphy in Anzio as he made his way from foxhole to shell crater battling the Nazis machine gun nests.

I showed it to my grandson who will be eight next month. His remark was, "That guy plays too many video games."

If an eight-year-old can see the tactical relevance of the "technique" (more precisely the lack thereof), I can't believe we're discussing it here.

I'm closing this because while it may be suited to an Airsoft forum, it's far below the bar we expect at TFL.
