The State Must Protect Jusky Kids!

Sorry, it should read, "The State Must Protect Husky Kids!"

I think this is one more example of the government trying to control people's lives. Make no mistake; we're only seeing the beginning of attacks on personal freedom. I'm gonna have another Moon Pie before they're banned.

Parents seek to regain custody of daughter, 3, from state

ASSOCIATED PRESS

Sept. 5 — The family of a 3-year-old who was taken from them by the state of New Mexico because she weighed 120 pounds hopes to regain custody of their only child in a custody hearing Tuesday.

THE PARENTS, Adela Martinez and Miguel Regino, are optimistic about reaching a deal at the Albuquerque hearing, their attorney, Troy Prichard, said.
The state took Anamarie from her parents two weeks ago after a social worker accused them of not putting her on a doctor-recommended diet.
The social worker’s affidavit says a doctor diagnosed Anamarie’s condition as leptin receptor deficiency, a rare genetic defect. It causes victims to think they’re hungry, even after they’ve eaten.
But Prichard says the accusations haven’t been proven. He says the affidavit “contains clear misstatements of the facts.”
The head of New Mexico’s Department of Children, Youth and Families has said the main issue isn’t the girl’s weight, but her safety.

How sad! :(
I;m not even going to post what "dangers" have been posed to my son since he was born.

OK, I'll say one very embarrassing one, he's almost three and a half, and I just NOW got him to go to bed w/o a bottle!!!!! (no cavity lectures, please, I am aware....)

How bout we talk about what the State of Kalifornie could've done to save me???? When I was three, I had a special little (one-ounce) cup. My dad would pop open a beer, and say, "Go get your cup." I was then treated to an ounce of beer! Funny thing is, my best friend's dad did the same thing (she grew up in Louisiana).
So far, we have successfully avoided life on the streets, passed out in front of 7-11.

When will the states learn that non-conformity does NOT equal abuse/neglect????

Cindy,
We still bottle feed our son to sleep, but instead of formula, we just use water. He accepted it just fine. Hope it helps.

I guess I have a bit of a problem with this one. 120# at 3 years old? Assuming she is of a normal height for a 3 year old: I am 5'5" and weigh only 5 pounds more than that. As I see it, the child has a very short life ahead of her, and a miserable one at that.

Not that state custody is the answer (it usually isn't unless the child is being severely abused); more and closer help for the parents might be. Chances are they are not well educated and feel that food and love will cure all ills. But some form of intervention is needed. In the past, the family and community would have stepped in, which would probably be the best, but.... Who knows?

My kids were raised with quirks of their own, and they turned out fine. But none of our parental "accomodations" threatened their lives and health.

Hey, when I was "wee" I also had my own beer glass (German family); it was a little shot glass shaped like a mug with a handle. I still have it!

Mrs MTN, the kid is not normal height. She's half again taller than average. Granted, 4'6" and 120# is still pretty far above a healthy ratio, but it seems blindingly obvious that the kid is just really-really- BIG!

*WHAM-WHAM-WHAM!*

Open this door in the name of DHS! We know you have an Excessively Large Child in there!

Oh, okay. I had no idea she was so tall. I was just having really bad visuals, thinking of the usual 3 year old height. I was thinking "grotesque," but she really is just husky.

This is only a case of the state knowing what is best.

You have to be there when it's all over. Otherwise you can't say "I told you so."

Better days to be,

I dunno. I followed the links to the local news report where they had a picture. Call me insensitive if you want, but that child is not husky, or large, or big-boned - she's fat. No two ways about it. But that doesn't mean I think the state ought to be involved in it... My 2¢.

New Mexico is the most poverty-stricken state in the nation, last I heard, and these parents have to go to court and fight The State because their kid's fat!

This interferrance is most unwarranted. Given the number of mentally incompetant, incarccerated, and otherwise dependent people who die under one form of state supervision or another, I just don't see where they can say they know best about anything. Very sad.
