In less then two weeks an election is going to take place. I believe evey election is important, but I also believe this one is more important then usual.

There are many important issues that need to addressed soon. One issue most of us on this forum are concerned with is the second amendment.

I feel that the current administration is as left-winged radical as we ever had. Yet, gun rights seem to have survived, more or less anyway. In the last half dozen years there hasn't been any signs of major gun grabbing federal legislation.

When this president was first elected his party had full control of congress. I really expected our gun rights to be eroded. Clinton was a moderate compared to Obama and he helped institute the assault weapon ban. This from a guy that was from a gun friendly state like Arkansas. I figured a community organizer from Chicago would spell certain doom for gun owners.

I have lived in Nevada since Obama took office. Around here gun laws have pretty much remained unchanged. I don't what other states are experiencing, but any Federal changes in gun laws would affect all of us.

Why do you think major changes in gun laws have not happened in the last five or six years?

First let me say with ever bit of respect that I can express here that I believe the tone of your post is a little bit of a problem. While I may or may not agree with the political slant of your post we really need to be careful when we make Second Amendment freedoms a left v. right issue. Constitutionally granted freedoms should be important to everyone regardless of their political persuasion and we as enthusiast, The NRA, and other interested parties need to seek ways to appeal to people all along the political spectrum.

I think the reason more significant gun control did not pass at the Federal level is because citizens who happen to be Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Independent, etc. expressed to their political leaders that we opposed more regulation. It’s important that we maintain and expand broad support for these freedoms.

not many seem to remember...that AFTER Clinton passed the assault weapons bill...the following election LOST him the control of the house....which gave him the assault weapons bill

Oh, there's been signs, but it hasn't passed legislation, or even made it to the debate stage.

And it hasn't passed legislation because there isn't enough support, especially in the House. The political party makeup of both chambers of congress is obvious, so that's all I'm going to say about that.

1. It's not worth the political fallout for the Democrats (yes, I know but they are the party primarily ranting about gun control). Here in Colorado, 2 Democrat state senators were recalled and 1 resigned over their gun control votes laws.

2. the gun industry and its related industries such as ammo, gear etc, have significant economic power and lobby accordingly

3. concealed carry is on the rise, nationwide

4. black rifle ownership is on the rise

5. the people don't want it

I was a kid in the 1980s and a young man in the 1990s and I was a gun crank through both of them and what seems to be far, FAR different now than back then is that it sure seems like many more people are shooting and owning guns.

No, it's not like the 50s, where kids would take their single shot .22 rifle home from school and shoot squirrels on the walk home. But when I was young (and shooting), nobody else that I knew of was doing anything of that nature, generally speaking.

These days, soccer moms or the average 23 year old male/female is likely to post Facebook pictures of themselves visiting a shooting range for the first time. We obviously didn't have Facebook of social media in 1988, but you didn't see Browning or Glock stickers on station wagons back then and these days, you can't swing a cat without seeing recreational shooting in pop culture.

Sure, it's made it tougher for some of you guys to get your ammo :p but I think it's been a very good thing for the hobby/lifestyle, especially if we can hope that SOME of them may think enough to vote in this direction also.

First off, we don't do right/left politics here. Let's avoid that.

Second, the 900lb gorilla in the room is the Heller decision affirming an individual right to own firearms. If we hand't gotten that (and pretty much at the 11th hour in retrospect), we'd have lost a great deal during this administration.

For better or worse, a politician's stance on guns is tied to perceptions of party loyalty and ideological consistency. As such, some folks are supporting us more than usual because it bodes well for their election chances.

We should consider those people fairweather friends at best. When it no longer suits their interests, we could see that support fade.

Oh, I remember Clinton and the AW ban. And I also remember the Import ban of '89 together with "read my lips, no new taxes (lie) cost Bush I his re-election. And, I remeber the Hughs (D) Amendment which was signed into law in '86 by old Ronnie Regan.

FYI, BECAUSE of these things, I voted for Ross Perot twice - once in '92 and once in '96.

I love it when my fellow 2A brothers and sisters point that the 2A issue is not a left vs right, Republican vs. Democrat issue, because it is so true. It's a single minded and monolithic issue that transcends political associations and alignments.

I live in Texas, a strong 2A state, and I know plenty of Obama supporters who are strong 2A supporters.

For those who can not separate the 2A issue from politics, just remember that the hero of the right, Ronald "Space" Raygun, wasn't exactly the strongest supporter of 2A (you can find plenty of examples, including an editorial that he wrote, including here:http://www.nytimes.com/1991/03/29/opinion/why-i-m-for-the-brady-bill.html)

No politician, no matter what letter they have, D,R, L or XYZ, or what area they come from, is our faithful friend, nor good and trusted servant about everything.

The main reason we haven't seen any successful push for new gun control is because due to many events the anti gun bigots have lost a lot of traction with the general public.

The political anti gunners have realized that gun control is a loser issue for them, in the current political climate.

Not pushing more gun control NOW has advantages for them. They have not gone away, nor given up. They are just waiting for us (as a people) to go back to sleep.

If you want to blame anyone for the state of our country you need to stop blaming the democrats and the administration, personally I am tired of hearing it.
The fault should be placed on us gun owners and other conservatives, we are to blame on the problems of our nation.

So vote this time or shut up.
Sorry for the soap box
