The Rise and Fall of Fox News

Wondering if it's just me.

A very short few years go, this was a breath of fresh air in comparison to other news alternatives. The station literally soared to the top as people tuned in by the millions to get news, rather than political ideology. One might hope they'd have understood their viewer base. As time goes on, I find myself unable to tune in at all...with the occasional exception of Brit Hume.

From Shep Smith, to O'Reilly, to Hannity to the incessant "Fox News Alerts", the growing NeoCon pap spewed by this station since 2001 garners them the same level of respect I have for NBC and CNN.

Sad really...."Fair and Balanced" was once an honest description for what is now a train wreck of attempted info-tainment.....only The Weather Channel can be cited as a more spectacular attempt at ratings suicide. Sadder yet when we have to turn to BBC as a "more balanced" news source....left of center, certainly; but not as near left as FOX has allowed itself to move right.

I'd have to agree... These days, I've just about given up on broadcast media for real news.

My main beefs with FOX are that they've turned to sensationalizing one main story to the detriment of any other news, as well as Bill O'Reilly. He's just too full of himself -- I'd like news, not self-worship of his own opinions.

If FOX went back to a news format, I'd be happy. Untill then, it's TFL and Fark for me.

Cheers,
Wolfe.

"news"

What passes for news on American TV is beyond a joke. Calling it infotainment would be too complimentary. With Fox all we get is jingoism and neocon propaganda--yeah, everything is going great in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Network news can hardly be bothered to do real news: they'd rather do "lifestyle" stories. I get most of my news from the internet, and take time to check sources. I don't believe Reuters and AP are unreliable liberal stooges, however. The BBC and Guardian UK sites have lots of international info which seems unavailable in US tv.

Obvious observation to you.
Brilliant insight to me.

You are spot on. I hadn't put my finger on that. It's really insulting to hear, on the way home from work, "This is a FOX News Alert".....only to have them broadcast the same, zero-info interview about a wild fire that you heard on the way to work.

Fox is bad when it comes to sensationalism and taking sides. However, I can't bring myself to watch MSNBC or CNN due to their left leanings.

If I have to listen to tripe to get the news, it might as well be tripe I tend to agree with.

Rich,

I agree with you and glad you posted

I personally do not own a TV.

Oh there are times I miss not having a 13" with rabbit ears - to play a VCR tape of training/ education/ or an movie thru - then I get over it. That '79 Sony served its purpose, still when it fell during a move...just tossed into the trash with the other trash.

Being around college campuses, hospitals, doctors offices - with "piped in" viewing, is sickening too. Everything is "skewed".

Fox "was" a breath of fresh air , on the rare times I viewed a TV. Now even the Fox New on the Internet is just another flavor of Indoctrination

Yes Indoctrination - exactly how I feel the MSM is being used.

Sometimes a 'mob mentality enhancer" - where whatever flavor one drinks of Kool -Aid, they can tune in and chant "hooray for our side".

I use the Internet. I come to TFL and THR to get my news, use the links cited to review, to learn more about, to research, to ask questions via PM and Email.

TFL and THR both have shared and educated me on to where to get news, how to "consider the source" and how to "trust and verify".

TFL and THR being Global Resources - with Global Membership - means we can find out from our "own" as to the Linked Sites credibility and any "slants".

One has to chuckle - TFL raised the bar, THR and other sister sites, blogs and such by members raised the bar not even the MSM can hope to attain.

Put that in your pipe Big Brother.

;)

Thanks Rich-

Steve

I used to be a religious Fox News viewer when it first came out. I was watching the morning show one morning and it was almost a paid advertisment for the Bush Campaign. When folks on news show start talking like folks walk on water thats a sign. Last night I tuned on to watch ORielly to see about giving him another chance....

blah blah blah liberals, blah blah blah liberals.. This is not the Orielly I started out with. he called a spade a spade. Now he sounds like a speech writer for the neocons in that 5 minutes I watched.

More like Faux News now....

I also do not watch NBC,CBS, MSNBC, CNN or others. I also only subscribe to my local newspaper and SWAT magazine.

occasionaly as I am flipping channels I catch Lou Dobbs with a good rant about the Chinese trade situation or illegal immigration....but thats about it.

I generally tune my telly to the SCi-Fi Channel or the Encore Western Channel....

I don't watch network television news. If I want to hear about politics on TV, I tune to the local public access channel and watch meetings of the city council, county commission, etc. - they are much more entertaining than network news.

I make the simple minded assumption that all news is biased regardless of the source. Pick a source and it will have a bias simply because it is the product of a human. Since I can't avoid bias, I opt to spread out my exposure to other outlets where I can pick and choose a bias of the day. Pick a bias and you can find some outlet which will reflect it.

Makes me an active participant in the news instead of being a zoned out slug.

But that's the whole point, Wait.

You and I and most others here will actually Tune In to watch Real News. This was the magic of FOX in the first couple of years. It's what rocketed them to the top. Their demise leaves one enormous void...for News, Commercialism and Profit. You'd think one of them would get the point.

Fox has gone from balanced to overly right ?

I'm okay with that. I don't watch tv news anyway, and this at least provides an alternative viewpoint to the leftist whacko stations. My fear is that if the leftist crap is all that mainstream America hears, they will assume that it is the truth and that everyone is onboard with it. If they hear an opposing view, whether it's correct or not, they won't be so quick to accept CNN and CBS.

Tonight during prime time on NBC a young man was pictured looking approvingly at a simulated penis flopping around in the center fold of a greeting card. So you tell me what network is going down first. And the sooner the better.

Umm

I watched Fox News on a TV all because of this thread.

Currently listening to a TV with the News, I am actually using a remote control.

I flipped radio stations as I drove here, and instead of music, searched for News.

<tacky expletive comments here> :)

Honest? Indoctrination.

I am trying to be open minded and receptive , and have admitted to not owning a TV personally. Indoctrination is worse now, than when I owned a TV. Oh and commercials take up more time than they used to.

I am trying to figure out if the powers that be get certain advertisers to force the stations to report the news from the perspective of the powers that be.

That make any sense?

Political Party A gets Car Mfg A to advertise on Network ABC
Repeat using B for NBC
C for CBS
D for Fox
....etc.

Even the ABC radio station had the same sponsors as the ABC TV one.

Add...
Around here a big deal about AT&T cutting into Comcast's "market share" that Comcast has had for 25 yrs. AT&T is going to have TV using new technologies.

Hey, for them fees, get a Computer and dial up ISP as I use. Unlimited Access for $19.95 per month and a dollar of that goes to NRA , or whomever else I want it to go to. Homepage has Pro Gun links and news...

I get TFL, THR, View From The Porch, LawDog Files, Nurse with a Gun, Munchkin Wrangler, and a whole lot more "News Sources" with links, links to historical references, BBC, and you name it to better understand what is going on.

Really nice is the fact I don't have some idiot screaming about great deals on cars on TV or the radio!

Great, Weather folks still don't know what the weather is going to do.

Weather Rocks never failed :p

Now watching the animals today, the clouds and smelling the air ...we have a chance of rain.

I betcha if I check NOAA, or Accuweather online I am correct.

NO TV means one less thing to dust anyway.

News is off and I am going back home. I have had my TV news fix for the year.

<shiver>

At least I have a Bob Seger tape to get me home safe and sane...

Another brick in the wall

The Alex Jones show gets more hits in one day than all the channels combined. Alternative talk radio is ruling in Texas and Oklahoma now. People are waking up out of their TV spell. The corporate media has lied for the bad guys and it just ain't getting over no more and without the media, they won't be able to move their agenda and make "bad" the whistle blowers. They will have to resort to something else, another pansy bust or an attack, so keep your camcorders with you and good hunting. [since they know all about me, I want to know all about them]. Reporters that want to keep their jobs are not allowed to cover what should be usable news. I say we cut off cable and get the new U band satellite and shortwave. Let's start finding out who the bad guys in the Government are, people. The red pill or the blue pill. I'm going to hang up this line now and tell the people what you are scared that they will learn. I'm just going to go hunting with a camera.
