The real Mossberg 590???

Hey all, My first post here so be gentle... I am trying to figure out which Mossberg 590 to get and am confused by all the differences.

Here's what I want... 9 shot, heat shield, bayonet lug, bead sight, METAL trigger guard and safety, parkerized

Is the 590 special purpose #50660 or #50665 the same as a 590A1 with the exception of the factory heat shield? What are the differences?

Does the 590 special purpose #50660 or #50665 have the METAL trigger guard and safety?

Does the 590 special purpose #50660 or #50665 have the heavier profile barrel like a 590 A1?

What Mossberg models were issued to the Marine Corps before the Benelli? (I seem to recall everyone in my unit had either the 590 special purpose #50660 or #50665 and OLD 870's? Are those the same as the the ones you can get out of the Mossberg catalog?

Are the speedfeed stocks any good? I've heard 50/50...

Sorry for the barrage of questions but I am so confused as I find many conflicting stories. Please include a Mossberg item # so I can tell my local gun guy to get the RIGHT thing!

Metal trigger is only on 590a1 along with heavy barrel. The plastic trigger has not been a problem with me. You can upgrade parts on the mossberg so find a model you like and can afford and upgrade later.

As for stock best is knox system. It reduces recoil and adj to most shooters. I had a speedfeed stock and replaced with a knox.

50*** are the non-A1 versions of the 590 with the standard barrels, plastic safeties and trigger guards.

the 51*** are the 590A1 versions.
Some of the 20" barrel (8+1) models are:

51660 = 590A1 with a bead front sight and synthetic stock
51663 = 590A1 ghost ring sights and synthetic sights
51668 = 590A1 ghost ring sights and speedfeed synthic stock

You can't get a heatshield from the factory on the heavy-wall barrel. There might be one aftermarket that will fit, but it's going to take sone modifying....
 
Is there a 51*** that is 9 shot? When I went to my local guy he said they were only available in 6 shot.

How much difference would the heavy wall barrel make make? (I know more metal = more strength... but honestly would an average joe notice???) Better patterning?
 
Welcome Hellbent. Why, Why, Why a bayonet lug:eek:? They dont sell a bayonet lug as an option for a reason;). Please dont be another mall ninja and put a bayonet on it.lol.
 
There is a 590A1 with a 18.5" bbl 5+1 capacity. It is a Military and LE shotgun. You want see it listed on the Mossberg website. Only a few LE dealers carry them. I like the 18.5" bbl 590A1 the best.


Here is a picture of one with one of my custom 7+1 tube extensions. They don't come with a Bayo Lug. Who needs a lug anyway.

In all seriousness I'm just trying to get the same shotgun I remember my unit having in the Corps.
 
I was under the impression most of the 590 models were 8+1...:o
New catalog on the way so I can't run thru their offerings on paper.

Combat Shotgun

Why? Oh why? Would you not want a bayonet on a combat shotgun?
My 590 Special Purpose (51688 I think) came with (NIB) 8+1 magazine, speed feed stock, ghost ring sights, a bayonet lug (uses same bayonet as M-16) and a parkerized finish.

Now, I admit I am an Oregonian - always have been, but I have never seen a low speed, high drag mall ninja packing a shotgun or any kind of fire arm for that matter. And, I am one of the first to point and laugh at silly tactical gear marketed to the 'mall ninja' crowd. I'll admit a bayonet is out of place in many circumstances; family reunions, in a speedo, on a duck gun or on a pistol (Someone please explain bayonet on a pistol - I just don't get it, out of ammo, then bludgeon with a handgun), but a combat shotgun should have a bayonet. As I understand it the first rule of combat is that the plans go out the window once contact made, so seems like giving oneself every opportunity in combat (Musashi would agree) is best. When technology fails or runs out of shells a pointy stick seems like an awful good thing.

Shotgun barrels are rather thin. When bayonets are used as they are supposed to be, the barrels bend more or less like those on the very early M 16s.

Every picture I've seen of a Mossberg 590 with a bayonet mounted does not have the bayonet in contact with the barrel at all. Instead, the loop on the bayonet which would normally go around the end of the barrel fits over a "knob" for lack of a better word on the end of the magazine tube. Here's an example:

I'd imagine that by the point in the fight when the bayonet becomes useful, you wont be too concerned about bending the barrel.
 
Do a lot of close combat in Oregon do you? Practicing with that bayonet, some think it helps to practice to be ready if you ever have to stick someone, will bend the barrel and/or the magazine tube as easy as the real thing. That model has a thicker walled barrel. How thick is the wall of the magazine tube.
 
If we are in close proximity where a bayonet might be deployed... You might want to consider all of my options because I sure I am...

Me with a Buck 110 from outta no-where is a far more effective combo than a knife on a shotgun barrel... That seems like trying to do surgery with a scalpel duct taped to a plunger handle.

And if we are close enuff to engage my bayonet... we are close enuff that I might lose the gun. If I lose it, I expect it is empty of ammo. Bad enuff the guy has a nice club but I give him a seven inch blade to gut me with?

Naw, I keep my weapons systems distinctly disconnected with purpose.
