The ongoing Dallas mayor campaigns feature candidates from all walks of life. Ed Oakley seems to be a favorite with the southerners. A study of his campaigns suggests that his northern opposition in a runoff would be council member Mitchell Rasansky. Former mayor Pro Tem has sought the assistance of political consultant Kathy Nealy and Dallas lawyer DeMetris Sampson to turn the southern votes to his favor. However Mr. Wells represented Far North Dallas on the council and is relatively unknown to the southerners.
Even more obscure is Dallas businessman Tom Leppert, the apparent choice of much of the city’s business elite. Mr. Leppert has tapped consultant Carol Reed to run his campaign and she has in turn sought the help of show host Willis Johnson to bring in the votes from the south. Everyone expects a spirited battle between the Wells and Leppert camps. Former airline executive Sam Coats, council member Gary Griffith and Dallas lawyer Darrell Jordan are the other contenders on the scene.
Even with the jockeying by candidates to woo the southern-sector voters, North Dallas still remains the most fertile electoral ground. In fact, in the most recent mayoral elections, the southern-sector vote has been the most irrelevant. Laura Miller won in 2002 and 2003 by rolling up huge vote totals in North Dallas. Most of the southern sector opposed her.
