The Press Has No Credibility Part 2785: Mike Wallace Used Fake Memo

Is it any wonder I don't believe anything I see in the RIMM? (reality impaired mass media).

If any news organization has the resources to do fact checking, 60 Minutes does. The fact of matter is that all pretense of "objective" reporting, with fact checking, is long gone. All that matters is presenting the spin decided upon in advance, and not reporting the facts.

Think about this the next time you hear about Presidential poll results.

Mike Wallace Used Fake Memo
NewsMax.com
Monday, Sept. 11, 2000
CBS’s Mike Wallace got caught again – this time fooling his "60 Minutes" audience with a phony document that made it look like a U.S. Customs official was trying to help Mexican drug smugglers.
On April 20, 1997, Wallace hosted a "60 Minutes" segment that claimed Customs officials were allowing trucks with drugs to cross easily into the United States.

As proof of his allegations Wallace cited what he claimed was a U.S. Customs memo written by Rudy Camacho, then the San Diego Customs district director.

Last week, Michael Horner, a Customs department whistleblower who had anonymously provided Wallace and "60 Minutes" with the memo, admitted he had fabricated the document.

Horner, 47, pleaded guilty to two felony counts last week.

The bogus memo "60 Minutes" said was written by Camacho provided instructions to Customs inspectors at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry to give easy clearance to a trucking company suspected of drug smuggling for a Mexican cartel.

Wallace never bothered to interview Camacho before broadcasting the allegations. Camacho later sued Wallace and won. The case got almost no national publicity. As part of its settlement, "60 Minutes" apologized on-air for making the allegations about Camacho.

Still, Wallace, who made his career demanding others answer his questions, has been ducking questions from the press about the Camacho controversy.

Wallace’s deceptive use of the fabricated document, which could have been vetted with a minimum of journalistic footwork, fits a pattern with the veteran broadcaster.

Earlier this year, NewsMax.com reported on Wallace’s "60 Minutes" attack piece on the 5-million-member Farm Bureau, a group he said had a conservative political agenda. Wallace didn’t disclose that his "60 Minutes" segment had been produced with the help of a radical animal rights group that has opposed the Farm Bureau.

Wallace has openly admitted he lies when it suits his purposes.

During the controversy over tobacco whistleblower Jeffrey Wigand, Wallace appeared on the "Charlie Rose" program with colleague Morley Safer. Wallace was asked point blank by Rose if he or "60 Minutes" had paid Wigand for his cooperation. Wallace denied doing so.

Later, after documents in a legal case showed that "60 Minutes" and Wallace had indeed paid Wigand $13,000 as a consultant, Wallace admitted he had lied on Rose's program.

If you see it on 60 Minutes or any of the other big network TV Newsmagazine format type shows, assume its a lie unless independently verified. If you do this, you'll never be disappointed.

Better yet, turn them off.

John Stossil (sp?) got nailed on fake stats too, remember?

He just pulled them out of his a$$ - like MOST of those "news" programs do.

Agreed Jack99 - turn them OFF!

The Big Lie and the phony reports have been being preached by the mainstream media for years.

Approximately five years ago -- sorry, don't have the exact date-- in the Los Angeles Times Sunday Magazine, there was a very long interview with Walter Cronkhite, by an L.A. Times reporter. (You know, good ol' Uncle Walter, Amerika's Most Trusted Propaganda Meister). In the interview, Ol' Walter stated that many people had begged him to become president of the U.S., and the only reason he didn't become our President, was because he would have made a lot of people angry because he would have installed a communist government and used the military to confiscate evry gun in Amerika. He's also long admitted that he was a "Progressive Socialist Democrat." Which means, on a practical basis, a Marxist Socialist.

Today's media pap dispensers, all worship at the Throne of Ol' Uncle Walter.

I knew some of the guys from AUDI when that campany almost got bankrupted by 60 Minutes. Remember, that segment that said that AUDI's would take off by themselves. Well there was one segment that was never shown.

An irate AUDI engineer, after realizing that there will be no way to convince 60 minutes that there is no way that these cars will not take off, takes Wallace (I think it was Wallace) outside and tells him pick a car any car. (This is all on tape by the way) The engineer gets into the car picked puts his left foot on the brake, starts the car, and floors the throttle. Full on Brake stand. But the car does not move all that happens is that the tires are spinning and smoking. In about 15 seconds there is a loud bang as the tranny blows, and the car has moved about 2 feet forward. The engineer get out and says, that woman had her foot on the throttle, becuase if she had her foot on the brake the car would not have moved. Guess what, the segment did not run.

I also don't watch Dateline or 20/20. Being in the aviation business, I get a first hand look at the unbelieveble distortions that take place on those programs. They appear to not do the most rudimentary homework. Actually I think they believe that the truth would ruin a good story.

I tell you if I am ever involved in something that the media is interested in, I will only say one thing to them "NO COMMENT" and I would advise everyone to do the same.

Pits,

"I tell you if I am ever involved in something that the media is interested in, I will only say one thing to them "NO COMMENT" and I would advise everyone to do the same."

The one big problem with that stance is that if we never say anything to the media then they will always be the only ones heard. :(

Tough call.

The one that always drives me nuts is the misconception regarding the stall, as in, "the engine stalled and the airplane nosedived."

Note the difference between Wallace and Stossel. Stossel was forced to publicly admit his mistake and apologize. He looked truly p*ssed about having to do so. Wallace, on the other hand, is an American icon. That he is also a flaming liberal doesn't matter; there's no way anyone would force an apology from him.

"60 Minutes" has become completely boring anyway. Time to retire, Mike.

CMOS- This is a very tricky situation with the media. we in the public domain need to only watch the media that is fair or tries to be like FOXNEWS. I refuse to watch any of the major networks, and am glad the internet is here as it will break the stranglehold the news media has on the news. Don't get me wrong, I understand how important it is to get into the debate and not disappear into the woods, because the media then portrays us as ignorant rednecks. The problem is what I call the Judge Starr problem.

Did you see the interview that Judge Starr did with Diane Sawyer after the impeachment. If you watched that with a critical eye, you could see that the questions where meant to trip him up. There was also the lighting and the camera angles they used when Starr answered questions. Sawyer was presented with soft light and flattering camera shots, while Starr was made to look like a demon in his shots including closeup non-flattering camera angles. I have never been able to look at Sawyer from that day without a profanity escaping my lips. The point is when you go against these people you cannot win. We are going to have to take over the news industry just like the liberals did.

Hey Jeff, where do you live in Kali, I live in south orange county. Yeah I hate the way the media talks about stalls, spins, tailspins (no such thing), and (gasp) uncontrolled airfields, where the pilots are not controlled by ATC (read the Feds)

Do you know that I can carry a gun in an aircraft loaded and good to go. There is no regulation against it.

Pitts,

Sawyer's 'reporting' is about as biased as you can get. She did the same hack job on the MMM vs SAS 'dog and pony show' in the White House broadcast just before the MMM rally in DC on Mother's Day.

The SAS ladies went into the liar's den anyway even knowing the deck was stacked against them. Little did they know how far the anti- movement would go to promote their side.

Sawyer's 'moderation' of the event was not moderation at all, but a ploy to portray the gun rights-defending SAS as a gaggle of paranoid anti-socials and the MMMs as being the most concerned about the peoples' welfare. The MMM 'facts' were accepted without question. Any time the true FACTS were brought up by our side or we were making valid points, she ended the conversation and moved on.

(off topic)
How can you stand to fly out there in southern Kalif? (my sister lives on Balboa Island) Give me my relatively unrestricted airspace here in the midwest any time! I did some areobatic flying here in a T-6/SNJ a couple of years ago. Lots of vertical space usage there! :D

I'm in the central valley. I can't even get a 172 :( (not that I would). When I lived in the bay area I had my choice from among 3 Citabrias and a Super Decathlon. Stick & rudder pilot's heaven!
