The placebo affect

Hey all--See what happens when i get bored:D. Time to embarress yourself in front of all of us. I have some things i do when i shoot (which i know are the placebo affect) wondering if any one else does weird stuff. Most if not all have seen the Shooter with Mark Wahlburg. In the movie just before he shoots the dDinty Moore can. He pushes his finger against the trigger guard. I find myself doing that now. Did it make a difference (seems to have) Placebo affect i know, but if it works do it. Another one i do. I never load the same day i powder cases. I powder that night and seat bullet next,( make a difference) who knows. I guess what im getting at is things you do that you know are Placebo in affect ,but some how seem to help. Please don't let me be the only weird one in here. Someone else has got to have some stuff like that you do?.:D

You won't, there's plenty of other folks here from north of the Mason Dixon. (The Lord's gonna git me for that one of these days). :D

No seriously, I've developed a weird thing I do with my strong hand thumb before I move my finger to the trigger for slow studious shots. With both rifle and handgun, I press my thumb hard towards the grip or frame, relax to a normal grip, and then prepare to take the shot. I don't think I do it with revolvers though. Placebo? Probably not. Bad habit? Probably.

Ooooooh yes. I do a triple tap on both the upstroke and down stroke on the Uniflow, and I also load cases in three steps, on step per day. That's just a few of many things that I do knowing that it probably doesn't help that much, if at all. You don't want to know how long it takes me to get a bench situated getting ready for load testing or before a match. If I forget to wear my designated "shooting cap", heck, I might as well turn around and go home! Rabbits foot be damned!!

I flex and straighten my trigger finger three times before each shot. I have a touch of arthritis, and I tell myself it is to make sure my joints are nice and loose so I can have more trigger control. It probably doesn't make a bit of difference, but it makes me feel better.

Nothing like that for actual shooting, but I believe that my habit of weighing charges and buying bench rest primers is an insignificant benefit at my particular level of shooting. if it only gains a sixteenth of an inch. I won't notice it.

But I do it anyway.

I think "superstition" is the word we are looking for here, aka the lucky rabbits foot.

Nah, the Lord just lets Alaskans take care of the Texans! (grin). We are thinking of cutting the place into 4ths and making Texas the 5th largest state

BigMikey--That's what im talking about. The mind plays a big role in shooting and if you can do something that (for lack of better words) tricks your mind into thinking it helps. Deep inside it probebly does help.

When reloading rifle ctgs. I weigh each charge. I throw short and trickle to center mark. A bit meticulous for hunting and plinking.

Same here on weighing each load. To me that is a part of the fun science of reloading. I also have been known to hand polish my brass. I like pretty bullets! ;)

I know....need to get a life... (sigh).

Only weird thing about this Wisconsin boy is I have a brother who lives in Milford Texas. I have to watch him like a hawk when he has a gun in his hands because you never know where he is going to point that thing. Like most Texans he spent to much time in the sun without his hat on and developed brain damage. Poor boy just can't help himself. :D

^^ Wow 4runner - looks like you may have restarted the civil war:D:D

This reminds me of when I lived in Biloxi, MS. Lots of folks down there say that anyone who lives north of I-10 is a Yankee. I-10 is less than 5 miles North of the Gulf of Mexico

Note Slightly off color so do not continue if offended.

3 men were on a bridge relieving themselves. A Texan, An Oaky and and Alaskan

Texans says: Dang that waters cold

Oaky says, and its deep to.

Alaskan Says, boys, there's oil down there!

That said, fine people are fine people and all areas have a lot of good ones and there are some plain awful ones as well. I like good people no matter who or what.

RC20, post #6

If we Texans could ship all of our hot air to Alaska, all of the snow and ice would melt and the remaining dry land would be smaller than Rhode Island.:p

When I swing on a dove with my Rem 870, I try hard to keep my head down as I swing thru the target. But then I don't pull the trigger. Instead, I swing backwards until I am behind the bird, then I swing forward a second time and pull the trigger as I pass the muzzle thru the target. First swing is to correct my cheek weld, second swing is to KILL THE SUCKER.:o

Looks strange - double swing - but works, usually 2 out of 3 shots are good.:D

P.S. We still love you, little bitty Texas.;)
