Gladiator historically correct?!?
Bwahahahahaha!

quote:
Hollywood teaches me so many things. Just this weekend I learned a lot of ancient history from this new movie called "Gladiator". For instance, I learned that Marcus Aurelius kept a bust of his imperial successor Septimus Severus in his tent, and that Commodus was stabbed to death in the arena by a gladiator named Maximus, and not-- as so many benighted shut-ins believe-- strangled to death in his bathtub by an assassin named Narcissus. I also learned that after the death of Commodus, Rome returned to a republican form of government and everyone lived happily ever after. Now, after seeing this movie, I realize that all those silly stories I read about Commodus hacking up dwarves and decapitating ostriches in the arena must have been untrue... I'm sure he was just a boring, misunderstood, whiny neurotic who didn't get a chance to "bond" properly with his father, just as he is depicted in the movie. I'm just grateful we have these major studios producing features such as this one, which can combat misinformation and clear up so many popular historical misconceptions.
And I'm not being sarcastic. Really.
