2 Georgia Men Survive Suicide Attempt After Cutting Own Arms Off With Saw
Friday, March 09, 2007

ATLANTA — Two Georgia men survived a gruesome suicide attempt Friday after cutting their own arms off with a saw, reported Atlanta's Journal Constitution.

The 40 and 41-year-old men managed to remove three of their four arms, cutting them about six inches above their wrists, Atlanta Police Major Lane Hagin told the Journal.

The men left a suicide note with the manager of their apartment building saying they were killing themselves because they were recently diagnosed with HIV and their business had failed, according to police.

The men are in stable condition at a local hospital and will undergo psychiatric tests, a police spokesman said.

I believe people should have the right to off themselves if they feel it necessary.Im not talking about 15 year old girls who just broke up with their boyfriends but If 2 full grown men of "reasonably" sound mind got hiv and lost their business then please let them do what they feel they must.I am convinced by the way that this is certainly not a cry for help and also cutting your arm off is not the cowards way out.Id see no reason why a firearm wouldnt have helped these poor bastards situation. If they ban my Firearms for possible use of suicide then I guess we need permits for saws to.

 That is disturbing. Off the top of my head I can think of at least 12 far less painfull, many quite peacefull actualy, ways to off myself. None of them involve a saw or dismemberment.

Suicide

The next time some anti says something about getting rid of guns to reduce the suicides, remember the old All in the Family show, and Archie Bunker's response; (approximately)

Gloria: "xxxx people committed suicide with guns last year"
Archie: "Would youse prefer they jumped out of windows, little girl?"

Any given (and grotesque) method that an individual or two have used to commit suicide isn't much of an argument against those that say banning guns would reduce suicide rates. Of course it's always possible to kill yourself in other ways...but the argument is that easy access to guns gives those that might otherwise not go through with it a way that is perceived as "easier," and also increases their chances of success.

To which I say two things. One, if somebody wants to kill theirself who am I to stop them? Give them the best tools available. Two, look at the suicide rate in countries where firearm ownership is rare and/or banned. Some have higher rates than ours, many have similar; it just changes the method.

It's obvious that these guys had some serious issues and were likely trying to make some sort of statement with their suicide. Now they can add "killing themselves" to their list of failures.

That is horrible,Id hate to be the one to clean it up later.

Guns have nothing to do with suicide. If someone seriously wants to commit to it, they will use whatever means they can get, poisons, razor blades, you name it.Suicide is an behavior much like any other and blaming guns for it is like blaming cars for auto accidents when there is a fatality, when its clear someone was reckless, impaired or careless.

The only way to prevent it is treatment and medications along with a great deal of support.

Hence the title and thread header ...

Boston Lead Singer Died 'a Lonely Soul'
Brad Delp Commits Suicide by Carbon Monoxide Poison
AP
BOSTON (March 15) - Brad Delp, the lead singer for the band Boston who killed himself last week, left behind a note in which he called himself "a lonely soul," according to police reports released Thursday.

The note was paper-clipped to the neck of Delp's shirt when police found his body at his Atkinson home, on the bathroom floor, his head on a pillow. He had sealed himself inside with two charcoal grills; toxicology tests showed he had committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning.

"Mr. Brad Delp. J'ai une ame solitaire. I am a lonely soul," the note read.

Delp joined Boston in the mid-1970s and sang two of its biggest hits, "More than a Feeling" and "Long Time." He was cremated Wednesday, after a private funeral earlier in the week.

His fiancee, Pamela Sullivan, called police March 9 after noticing a dryer vent tube connected to the exhaust pipe of Delp's car. In the garage, police found a note taped to the door leading into the house.

"To whoever finds this I have hopefully committed suicide. Plan B was to asphyxiate myself in my car."

In another note on a door at the top of the stairs, Delp cautioned that there was carbon monoxide inside.

"I take complete and sole responsibility for my present situation. I have lost my desire to live," he wrote. The note also included instructions on how to contact his fiancee: "Unfortunately she is totally unaware of what I have done."

Police later found four sealed letters in an office addressed to Sullivan, his children, their mother, Micki Delp, and another couple whose identity was not disclosed. Police Lt. William Baldwin said police gave the letters to family members without reading them. [Actually, that was quite decent of them to do that. j]

Sullivan told police that Delp "had been depressed for some time, feeling emotional (and) bad about himself," according to the reports.

He had planned to marry Sullivan this summer during a break in a tour with Boston. A lifelong Beatles fan, Delp also played with the tribute band Beatle Juice.
