I am contemplating buying the s99 in 9mm. I am wondering if anyone has any +or- comments on the gun. I really like the decocking lever and the cocking indicator. Are these functions reliable? How does it feed ammo, any jams? Accuracy?
Any info would be a great help
Thanks

Hello jeepster, I don't know if this will help you, I have a Walther P99 which is the German version of the same gun. Now I bought a James Bond MI6 version so I will never fire it. It is the 9mm version. I have handled it and dry fired it and worked the thing over and I like it, Just won't put a bullet out the end.
I've been thinking about buying another one so I can have a shooter and to help keep some of the cost down a little I've considered the SW99. I'm sure they are not that much apart
Hopes this helps a little :)

Happy Shooting :)

I have shot one, and it is one of the most accurate semi-autos I've ever shot: ragged 5 shot hole off hand at 25 feet. However, the trigger is horrible. You have to learn to stage it between shots, or it is way, way too long a pull. Also, there is too much (in my opinion) "stuff" on it, i.e. chamber indicator and decocker and the mag release is not in a comfortable place.

I spoke with a Smith & Wesson rep about them and he admitted they were designed for law enforcement, and S&W suggests that if you shoot this gun, it should be the only one you shoot because it is so different than most semis you need to be second nature with these differences.

Finally, the one I shot, the guy is getting rid of it after just a couple of months - he hates it.

POS. At least buy the Walther P99. The SW 99 is ammo sensitive and just doesn't have a tight over-engineered feel to it. The SW 99 at my range coughed on some reloads that everybody else liked (Glock, Sig, Kahr, HK).

For the money, I'd buy another German or Autrian gun!

I found out about the sports-trigger by searching a German firearms board for anything to do with Walther. I found a post by Martin Zacherl about the sports trigger. I had corresponded with him before, so I asked him about it. Here's his response:
quote:
there is a new type of "trigger-system" available at Carl Walther in Ulm.
I just sent them my P99 an got it back 3 weeks later with a "Sports-trigger" which is better for competitions.

Here is an Email of the person which I contacted at Walther:

d.brumbach@carl-walther.de

The price for the tuning was about 200,-- DM which ist just $100. The good thing ist that you get the old trigger back, so you can easily change it back to the origial condition.[/quote] I faxed Earl's (which I gather is now AKA Walther USA) and they replied that they would do it for $95. I haven't called them yet to get the details.

If ya gotta pay to "Fix" or retro fit a factory item that a majority of people don't like, are you really getting a deal?
The one that I shot, I liked, but it's too much different from any other gun out there in terms of placement and number of controls, that it's an oddity, not a carry gun unless it's your only one.
Very accurate, seems durable, but the S&W version is feed sensitive. No such problems with the pure Walther version.

You're not actually considering buying a new Smith and Wesson are you? After their announcement of cooperation with the white house?

I've had my 9mm sw99 for three months and this is the second time I've had to send it back to S&W. The first time they replaced the barrel because it would not feed. Now the trigger is malfunctioning. This weapon was bought brand new! Maybe I got a lemon but never again!

I vote for the Walther P99.

POS. Very accurate, Very reliable, Bond's toy, What else do you want? BTW, I have the pistol for over a year and had fired about 3000 rds of both factory and reload ammo without a single incidence of malfunction. All the parts are still original and the pistol looks like new.

Good luck with your purchase.

Forget about buying the Smith. Forget about buying the Walther too. Walther sold out to Smith. Smith sold out to Vlad the Monica Impaler. Therefore, by proxy, Walther has sold out too!!!

My SW99 has fed very well except for UMC which is cheap junk anyways. Winchester works great. It seems to shoot low at 25 yards but seems to be a good gun. S&W said they will look at it if I decide it is shooting too low. I feel the long trigger pull is causing me to pull the gun down. When it warms up I am going to have someone else shoot it to compare.

Nice gun in my opinion. Price is a little steep but you can find it at gun shows for a little over $500.

jeepster--I never did like the erratic trigger on my P99,9mm. I have been waiting for the right time to trade or sell it, but now I may try the new trigger (QA). It will be a toss-up whether to invest another 100 bucks,or loose that much, at least,on a trade or sale. The way things are going now the best thing for all of us would be to keep what we have, and borrow money if we have to and buy more guns...If you want a P99 get a WALTHER.But GET IT NOW...
