The new Mauser M2

Last day I recived a brand new .40SW Mauser M2 for testing. After around 100 rounds of 170gr FMJ-FP ammo (with one FTF) here is my subjective opinion:

Strengths:

+ Extremely strong slide (built like a tank),
+ Bull barrel,
+ Very strong slide rails (keeping the slide away from the alu frame)
+ Light recoil,
+ Good balance,
+ Fast target acquisition,
+ Cycling the slide by hand is very easy (this is a plus for women),
+ Acceptable accuracy (6-7 inch group from 20 rounds at 25 meters, offhand)

Weaknesses:

- Very long, gritty and heavy trigger pull (feels like DAO),
- Very long trigger reset (slow, 0.30 sec double taps),
- Thick, somewhat uncomfortable grip,
- Two-step feed ramp, (IMHO this caused the FTF with the flat-point round),
- Small, very sharp, and badly positioned safety lever,
- Magazine safety,
- Huge take-down lever,
- Too thin slide lock, very hard to operate,
- Chamber loaded indicator too small,
- Sharp rear sight, made from different metal than the front sight,
- Big gaps between the slide, frame, and barrel (recoil spring clearly visible at the ejection port), considerable slide to frame play at the muzzle,

What is your thought on this one, guys?

I've heard the safety on the M2's referred to as a "lawyer safety".

As in "Why yes, Your Honor, our firearm was equipped with a safety, we're not negligent. Perhaps Mr. Smith didn't use the safety we provided...".

In other words, it looks like it's intended to be carried like a DAO, with the safety off, but it has a manual safety for legal reasons (...and doesn't MA require a manual safety?).

It's an odd little safety, the predecessor of that safety escapes me but it was done about 60 or 70 years ago. Tamara's right, it's kind of like the "insurance back seat" in my sports car...

Another odd thing about the Mauser is the language in the company literature implying that it is meant for occasional use only... not a duty weapon or frequent shooter.

I understand they don't like to run dry very well- apparently they need more lube than some pistols made these days.

If they're selling for around $300.00, they're probably fine weapons for the price.

Gunhead,

How much did YOU pay (or would you have paid?) I'd really like to give one a whirl sometime.

Ben

We received it just as a test sample from the authorized SIG/Mauser dealer, so I haven't paid anything. I have no clue what will be the price, but the 300 USD what Ben Shepherd posted sounds tempting, especially for the .357sig fans. :)

It's a very tough compact pistol, but first I would take it to a gunsmith for a trigger job (and to remove that annoying, sharp manual safety lever).

ps: The exchange rate is 1 USD = 280 HUF. :)

I have looked at one up close, but not fired one.

I put it back down without a detailed examination as just the hefting of it left me feeling rather disappointed.
