The New Combat Magnum...

I actually bought a "new" gun for a change. Well sort of. It was in the used case, but was in unfired, in the box condition. I've wanted one since I first saw them, but didn't want to pay the full retail price for one.

"One" is the new Smith & Wesson Model 69, "Combat Magnum" in 44 Magnum. Not the best looking S&W I've ever owned, but still not really "ugly" either. Sort of "plain" I guess.

Built on Smith & Wesson's "L frame", it's a five shot, 44 magnum, with a 4.2 inch (Canada friendly) barrel, adjustable sights, and some kind of rubber grips (they sort of remind me of the old Uncle Mikes grips). The sight are black (good) with a red insert front and white outline rear, the trigger, hammer, and cylinder release are black also...(OK...not so good, but not awful either). The price in the used case was a couple hundred lower than in the new case on the other side of the counter. Like most new Smith & Wesson's it does have "the lock". Not a big deal to me, but I know some don't like it. Probably not a gun you'd want then.

Although it is chambered for 44 Magnum, I will probably never shoot any. I've got a good stash of 44 Special brass, and since I don't used a gun for much of anything except putting holes in paper, those will do just fine.

I took it to the range yesterday along with a box of my reloads. 200 grain RNFP cast bullet, over Unique (the load is in the book). I make no claim to be a great pistol shot. I'm a duffer at best. From ten yards, standing with a two handed hold, the first 25 shots looked like this.

The ones that didn't go into the 10X ring area are my fault. The gun is very comfortable. S/A trigger is crisp. I didn't even shoot it D/A but the D/A trigger is pretty good too IMHO.

The last 25 in the box made that area at the top of the X ring into one big ragged hole. I didn't touch the sights.

Normally I don't care for rubber grips but these are at least comfortable, and work well at the recoil level I was working with. Since I like my guns to look "stock" I probably won't do anything with them.

I'm looking forward to working with this one. I think S&W has a winner here. If I was still bumming around in the woods, I think it would be an ideal companion.

Very handsome, well balanced looking revolver. I like the adjustable sights.

From the sound of your first range session you two are destined for a long and comfortable relationship.

Years ago I tried to get Pachmayr grips on any handgun that came my way (to the disgust of some of my relatives I even put a set on a Ruger Old Army) so the black rubber grips look fine to me.

This gun makes the 44 Magnum a gun (and ammo) some might actually carry concealed. Sorta explains the model name "Combat". I am not much on blast finish and handled one I found difficult to covet, being a bit too utilitarian looking for me, sort of a big bore kit gun.

Now this is why I asked about 357's vs 44's. Man, that's one heck of of a nicely
built revolver. Maybe I'll just have to look into getting one of these.
Good shooting.

I'm guessing it'll handle factory .44 Mags like a Ruger SP-101 handles .357 Mags. Your shooting hand will start complaining before either firearm will. I'd bet that it would handle the Skeeter Skelton .44 Special handload very nicely.

Nice. I've got a dozen older pinned and recessed models and I'm not interested in any of the new guns except for maybe that model. Perfect sized gun and I reload so 44 special is just as easy to make as 9mm or 38 special.

Reddog, I was exactly the same way. "New" guns just don't normally interest me, but from the first time I saw it, I liked this one.

The other thing I like about it, is I'm glad to see that S&W has enough confidence in the revolver market, outside of the J-frame self defense segment, to design and market the 69 and the new 66. There can't be much hope of a major police buy, so they have to be thinking of the "civilian" for lack of a better word, market.

Doc, this is why I'd put off replying to your thread. I wanted a chance to shoot this one first. I'd still pick the 357 as my "go to" gun I suppose, mostly because I've got a lot more experience with the 38/357 cartridge combo, but the choice just got harder.

Theres something about the clean lines of the basic S&W revolvers thats always appealed to me.

That one looks a lot like my 620 (7 shot .357), which I believe they have discontinued.

I carry mine full time, in a homemade under-the-shirt vertical shoulder holster. It carries as well as my full-size 1911. Those two guns share primary weapon duty ... the 69 more often when the bears are awake, and the 1911 more often when they are hibernating.
