The most inaccurate rifle in history!

Boy am I glad this was a gift. Finally got to take the Mosin Nagant M44 to the range today. At 50 yards it was...

1 1/2 feet!!!!! Low and to the right!!!!!

Even the RSO could not get it any better, and I have been outshot by him with open sights while I was using a scoped rifle!!!

Wow what a piece of junk! I am sure in its heyday this gun was much better, but since it was made in the early 50's, I believe it qualifies for being "shot-out"

You should get 4" groups with the M-44, six inches if you don't do well with open sights. Maybe the muzzle is screwed-up or you have a lot of really bad ammo.

i'm not surprised if you can't group with that wolf crap. I had some 223 and 7.62x54 and couldn't get groups under 4 inches at 100 yds but shot some under moa with reloads and winchester ammo at the same range

I think Wolf uses a 200gr bullet. Maybe it isn't sufficiently stabilized by the short carbine barrel? I have used nothing but silver tip Czech surplus in my M44 with good results. Groups significantly less than 1.5 feet :)

Hi, Doc,

Do you mean the group was 18 inches low and right or that the rifle shot an 18" group low and right?

If the group is 18", you have a really bad rifle. If the group is good and just off target, the sights may be way off or the barrel could be bent. Fixing the former is easy. Fixing the latter is easy, but tricky.

No, guys, no!

Ammo has nothing to do with it. And if scope/mount is O.K., it's
a shooter. I had the same thing happened to me - known MN expert (..smile) at Tuco's board. Scoped MN w/o muzzle brake is simply a beast, it's just scary to shoot it w/o giving a thought to a real possibility that scope is going to run you right in the eye, and unless shooter is able to hold it like in a vise, it will do exactly that...I shot M-44 w/o scope much better, exactly like the guy
described...

By the way, even if M-44 is ZEROED with bayo extended, it makes no difference w/scope, which is a totally different sighting system..

Since that time all my custom MNs have HUGE MBs...cutting recoil
50% really helps to shoot 1" groups at 50 yards with any ammo,
except this Albanian crap...

Sounds like the barrel is turned too far....either overtorqued or cut wrong for that receiver. Applicable to right hand thread.

First things first.......check headspace before firing again.

A question DOC, it wasn't very clear to me, is the 1 1/2 ft. you mentioned the size of the group or the POI away from the bull? If it is the POI distance, what is the size of a 5 shot group?

I don't see why you would say the MN is "shot out" if you're getting a "nice group". The sights obviously need some serious fixin', like with a file on the front or a replacement on the rear or you can solve it all with a scope.

Your rifle is not shot out or inaccurate it just needs the sights adjusted to your ammo and maybe shot at a greater distance as they were supposed to be. My 91 shot about 12" high at 100 yards but was much closer at 200. Adjust the front sight to center then work with the rear and front to zero at 100 yards. Those old guns work great if you put a little work into them. And like you said it was a gift so just have some fun with it.

IF either the shooter or the RSO tried to correct with sight adjustment....to no avail. Then I'm stickin with the barrel not being properly installed on the receiver.

Using cheapo milsurp ammo, my beater M44 is an open sight pleasure in the 50 to 100 yd range. They're not bad for the money, so don't let one potentially bad specimen ruin your opinion of the entire genre.

Accuracy is consistency.
First step, get a good group. Sound like the nagant does that.

Second step, adjust sights so point of aim matches where the bullets hit.

How adjustable are Nagant rear sights anyway?
