The most durable...

The most durable pistol is the best IMHO. So what`s your opinion? Which one 9mm and .40 S&W pistol is the most durable?
If it is 9mm I`d say Glock 17!

The "best" pistol is the one you shoot best that is reliable. May not be the most durable, or even the one you like best, or is the most popular, etc.

That said the 1911, CZ, Glock, HKs, Ruger and all steel Stars and S&Ws, polymer SIGs are the toughest. Toks and Maks too. BHPs will go at least 40K or more...

A good revolver will go and go and go... a steady diet of Magnum ammo the L/N frame S&Ws, the Rugers are hard to beat.

Even the alloy framed S&Ws, Berettas and SIGs are more than tough enough for most. If you can afford to shoot enough to wear it out, you can afford to replace it?

Probably the Swiss 9mm SIG P210. The Swiss have run several 100.000 round endurance tests replacing only the barrels when the rifling was gone.

I wouldn't park a truck on any pistol that doesn't say "Glock" on it.

Love 'em or hate 'em, you can't escape the fact that they're probably the most rugged pistol built. I'll tell customers who ask me the "Glock or SIG?" question that if they have both pistols and need to shoot over a wall, they should stand on the Glock and shoot the SIG, because the Glock won't care...

Definitely Glock for ultimate durability. Say what you want about the Plastic Fanastic but it is as durable as it gets.

Tamara, I love the "over the wall" thing. :D

If you wear out a P229, P228 or P226, then like Broken Arrow says you can certainly afford to replace it.

So many pistols, so little money.

R6;

One of the Glock LE reps I know will pull up at the cop shop, hop out of his Yukon and put a G22 on the pavement, park the truck on top of it, go inside and make his spiel, then come back out, back the truck off of the pistol and take it to the range and give the usual malfunction-free performance. What exactly in the real world this relates to, I haven't the foggiest, but it'll definitely convince you that this is one tough pistol. :)

We all know Glock is #1. All I miss is an external hammer.

Wouldn't leave out the Kahr's when talking durability. Hey Tamara! How come you spell dawg/dog two different ways in your signature? :)

Irfan:

We are talking physics 101 here. Most of the premium brands will last for 30K+ rounds and some will fail. Many will even make it to the 100K mark.

Pick the one you are comfortable with and enjoy.

Ronin 99,

The .45 crowd over at Glock Talk refers to themselves as the Big Dawgs. My sig line, imported from there, is an inside joke for those who've capped off full-house 10mm auto loads on the same range as someone shooting .45 ACP...

When I'm shooting my Glock 29 or my .357SIG G33, someone always wanders down to see what the ruckus is.

Will,

I totally agree with that. Most name brand autos these days will last many more rounds than the average shooter is likely to put through them. A far cry from my Charter Arms Bulldog Pug that didn't make it to #300. I guess part of my fascination with the Austrian Wunderpistolen is their tolerance of, not just extended use, but ridiculous levels of abuse.

Greetings Tamara, Great post; I see that you
are a Glockmeister!!! :) Well, if you have read my many post in the past, you know
I prefer Sig's. I agree, todays quality
weaponary, properly taken care of will
last a lifetime. You and the other's that posted Glocks are more durable, are most
likely correct; as they are almost indestructibile. :D They been dropped from
airplanes, buried in sand, submerged in
salt water, and thrown (fully loaded G17)
60' into a concrete wall; and came up ticking
every time. My "P" series Sigs are tough; but
the Glocks have 'em beat. Don't know about
the H&K USP? I own a full size in .45ACP;
but the jury is still out on this one!!! :)

Best Wishes To All,

The Navy SEALs tell me the only pistol they have trouble destroying is the H&K USP series. The SEAL Team 1 members I have shot with say that they have no trouble breaking the Berettas & Glocks with the SIGs being great except they corrode too quickly in salt water. They all seemed to love the USP Compacts.. Liked the SOCOM but said it was too big for many applications.

They did say that they were especially tough on ALL their equipment and that just cause they broke it should not reflect on how a weapon would withstand law enforcement or civilian use.

Tamara,

I heard a good story about a Glock LE rep that I would have given my left, ummmmm, pinky finger to have witnessed. :D

It went something like this...

Several high end manufacturers were spinning their sales pitch to a large local PD trying to win the account. After everyone had preached the virtues of their guns, the Glock LE rep gets up and throws a G22 across the parking lot as hard as he can chunk it. It bounces and flips around on the pavement and comes to a rest. He then picks it up and proceeds to the indoor range where he puts a clip through it and then passes it around for insspection. According to my source on the story there was absolutely no damage to the finish on the Glock from it's trip across the parking lot!

The Glock rep then invites the other manufacturers' reps to do the same demo with their pieces. Guess what? They all declined!! :D

I'd have payed good money just to see the looks on their faces when the Glock rep turned to them and said..."Your turn" with a big grin on his face!!!! :D

Needless to say, they went with Glocks. ;)

Keep in mind, I didn't witness this. It may be a rumor but it was told as the truth.

Another story that I did witness. A Glock civilian sales rep was in Wolf Creek in Douglasville doing the cutaway Glock demo for the sales personel and the few customers that were there at the time. After explaining the Tenifer finish on all Glocks and the hardness of it he takes a Glock armor's tool (basically a steel punch) and proceeded to put most of his body weight into it while dragging it down the side of the slide!! After several passes with the tool he picks the gun up, wipes it with his finger about three times and then hands it to me. Absolutely no signs that he even touched the slide.

I have seen the Wolf Creek staff demonstrate the same demo to customers since then with out of the counter Glocks so I know it wasn't a rigged demo gun trick.

Why don't you guys try that with your SIG/Ruger/S&W/1911/Kahr/(insert your brand here)'s slide? :D

I ain't saying Glock is the best gun. That's up to the owner. I'm simply saying that it *IS* the most durable. :)

Glocks are definitely _NOT_ the most durable when it comes to standing up to reloading mistakes and/or the rare bad factory round.

Have seen numerous Glocks rupture barrels, crack slides and frames on the local public/private and LE ranges in 40/45. Rem factory ammo was blowing up Glocks here last summer; the SIGs, USPs, and even Sigmas, just blew cases and kept on going.

A guy here has a favorite IPSC 40 load of 200 grainers at 900 fps. Uses Briley and Sigma barrels in the Glock cuzz the Glock barrels blow the cases.

I did mention Rugers up there too.

Forgot about the SIG P210, but if you can afford one of those, you can get 2 or 3 of anything else?

I don't need toughest, I need tough enough. :)

All the god guns are.

R6;

I have two small stripes on the slide of my G23C from our rep's last visit. One from a brass punch and one from my CRKT K.I.S.S. pocketknife. One stripe is brass-colored, the other is steel. Not stripes in the finish, stripes on the finish: metal worn off the punch and tool-steel blade and deposited on the slide. I started to clean them off, but wound up leaving half of 'em on. Good sales gimmick at the shop...

I saw a Glock rep pitch a Glock 17 about 20 yards downrange at a local PD firing range. I was mightily impressed.

So I went home, got some old ammo out of my 'Things I Have Not Been Killed With' box and brought it back to him. Asked him to fire it through that wonderful pistol.

He wanted to know what the catch was. I told him it was Afghani ammo, mentioned the fact that it used nitrocellulose film for propellant. He graciously, and speedily, declined to fire it in his Glock.

I'll stick with my HK. It doesn't handle the downrange throwing as well as the Glock, but it ran the Afghani stuff without a burp. And I try not to make a habit out of tossing my pistols at the critters.
