What is more controversial? Gun control? Best deer rifle? Remington pump shotgun vs Mossberg pump shotgun? Ruger vs Smith & Wesson? Best conceal carry gun? Best gun for hiking in bear country? Best gun for home defense?......etc etc. The answer is none of the above. The most controversial subject in regards to firearms is how to clean the dang things. I have read countless posts on gun cleaning and virtually every cleaner, lubricant, type of rod and method is hailed by some and cursed by others. How can one guy successfully clean his guns for 50 years using a 3-piece aluminum rod and WD-40, while another completely removes the rifling from his new gun the first time he tries it? I guess some people are just more talented than others.

I agree with the cleaning aspect, I've been on both sides. I've gone from cleaning my guns with a fanatical almost religious fervor. Scrubbing bores relentlessly. To a more practical approach of cleaning when it needs it.

Most controversial? Not so sure. Most varied answers? Maybe. Not so sure people care enough to have strong feelings. There are those that do of course.

Interesting though. Folks might just come along and prove me wrong. Wouldn't be the 1st time, or the last.

1. Which firearm is best - Glock or 1911?
2. .40 S&W was nothing more than a solution looking for a question; 9mm is for anemic children; .45acp is the only man-killer handgun round ever made...or .45acp was for a time long ago when no one carried more than 7 rounds in their guns....before the Crips and the Bloods.

I agree gun cleaning debates produce the most varied opinions, but not sure it’s the most controversial. At the end of the day most of us achieve the same end results when cleaning a gun, but we use different tools and procedures to get there.

I suspect most controversial is the debate about open carry.

- AR15 vs AK47

- Piston vs Direct Impingement

- 5.56x45mm vs 7.62×51mm (ones a poodle shooter, the other is a nation destroying juggernaut, and a man's round)

- 9mm (or less) vs .45 ACP (and up) regarding "stopping power" also, see previous point)

These topics come to mind the most for me.
