the "loophole" that wasn't

Understand Clinton is in Colorado(who paid for the trip) beating the drum for state closure of what he, and some others refer to as "the gun show loophole".

As I understand the law, correct me if I'm wrong, the following are the facts. Re sales made by licensees, the federal background check is run, as required by law.

PRIVATE SALES BETWEEN INDIVIDUALS, according to federal law, do not reguire any sort of background check, nor paper work, based on GCA'68 and other legislation enacted since.

Additionally, whatever background check system as might be in use in the state where this "show" is held, IS NOT AVAILABLE TO UNLICENSED INDIVIDUALS.

Anyone have any ideas as to which specific "loophole" Slick Willie and allies might be talking about. Of course, we all know that it is nasty to confuse the anti's with facts, however I thought that I would ask.

I believe what they are trying to stop is the sale of guns privately between individuals and they are not telling you this to make the whole gun show scene look evil. Slick Willie and his story tellers at their best!
I hope this answers your question :)

What they want is for all sales between any entity--private or licensed--to be subject to the NICS. The "Evil Gun Show" is just a smoke screen.

The Lautenberg Amendment, I believe it is, would mandate a NICS check within three days. Well, the #$%# show is over before three days is up.

What has happened is that for Monday through Friday, the FBI operates the NICS at reasonable speed: Often within a very few minutes. However, on Saturday and Sunday it is common for "the computer is down" and the checks cannot be made--as they apparently wish the situation to be.

The NRA side is that the NICS be truly "Instant Check", with a 24-hour maximum. This is what can and should be in place, and usually is--as I said above--during the week.

Just more garbage.

Lok answered correctly...
the intent is to ban private sales at gunshows; then (after a couple months) they'll "have the epiphany" that the gunshow loophole isn't enough and start a campaign about banning all private sales...along with that they'll go for total reg and licensing. Afterall, they have to be able to know who has a gun in order to prevent them from selling to their felon neighbor.
Trust me, the next 2-3 yrs are make or break for the concept of free citizenry where the rule of law (not mob hysteria or fad concepts) is the guiding path.

DC:

Believe you are right. By the way, I hadn't seen anything indicating that you weren't trustworthy, though who knows, I might have missed something, somewhere along the line.

The "funny" thing about all this is as follows: Gore is bad news, however one is uncertain about how much of an "improvewment" Bush might be.

All to often it seems, "elected things", be they Democratic or Republican are all to ready to "compromise" on what are really basic civil rights, things about which there should be absolutely no compromise, for the term "compromise" brings with it, the idea of giving up something.

Re the anti civil rights, anti gun cabal, any compromise, anything that gives them anything is merely encouragement to come back for MORE. Strange though it seems, there is always some horses ass that is willing to give something up to them, notwithstanding the fact that the surrender of essential liberties brings with it nothing desirable or worth having.
