The IMI Desert Eagle :: What's the hype?

Obviously as anyone has noticed, the Eagle has recieved tremendous recognition in the entertainment industry and is looked upon as a very powerful weapon. But whats all the hype? I don't get it. Has anyone here fired this gun? What does it feel like? I've heard so much about the gun, all I want is the truth.

dont know what the hype is about, I have never shot the thing, my only interest in the gun is the fact that its the biggest caliber handgun that makes lots of noise and packs a big punch.

I've owned one in 44mag for several years. Now while I wouldn't recommend it as a first gun, if you are a collector, it should certainly be on your list. The weapon is awesomely engineered, (uses the AR15 rotating bolt and lock-up) and can easily disgest the hottest loads. Since it weights nearly 5 lbs. and has a gas operating system, recoil is not severe. My particular gun is supremely accurate (most are), and can shoot around 1 inch or better at 50 yards, from the bench.
I think it's popularity in hollywood is due to it's size, and it distinguishing looks compared to all the "9"s out there.
If you ever get a chance to shoot one, you'll understand it's "mystique"

Like Tabing said, you need to fire it to appreciate it. The gun is absolutely amazing, I am on my second 50AE- sold my first, and realized how stupid I was for selling it (didn't use it much, so I got rid of it for some other guns).

After watching the "Matrix", its enough to want a Desert Eagle IMO- seeing the gun cycle in slow motion, totally awesome.

I should add though that I believe the gun is basically useless for all intensive purposes- very heavy, tough to shoot "real" accurately. Its just a gun that rates real high on the coolness factor, and its fun- thats all I expected out of it.

More like the Desert EGO...

I have fired the 50AE and I think they are poorly made hunks of scrap. Trigger is crap, sights are lousy, Grip is too large.
Where I shoot you mostly see the teens and gang-bangers shooting them for the WOW factor.

If you want a high calibre semi handgun that is a work of the machinist's art the check out the new Wildlys. These are the real-deal. Finely made, hand fitted works of art.
You will have to pay $1,200 to $1,600 but you will at least have a real weapon.

The new "Wildeys"- my goodness, are they still making guns. Thought they were done awhile ago. They are nice pieces though, have held a few.

DE's are not poorly made IMO- in what way?- the standard sights are eh, I have the adjustables on mine and are great.

My wife and I each have our own in 44Mag.
Very smooth to shoot. Can put every round of a clip into a group of 5 inches from 30 feet in under 7 seconds. With the 14 inch barrel and a good scope, 100 yard shots are no problem. The gun is more accurate than I am.
The size of the grip and the heft of the gun did take some getting used to at first.
It gets a big thumbs up from me.

Got one in 50AE. To me, it's got less recoil than my Raging Bull. Just don't (or can't) shoot more than a couple of mags, when I go to the range.
And yes, it's awesome to look at and hold in your hand. :)
Only drawback: hard to clean...

No fate but what we make...

The DEP was the first pistol available in my favorite caliber. It's everything it's hyped up to be, powerful, acurate, reliable, and easy to shoot.

I've shot a whole 2 rounds out of a .50 DE. While I would not necessarily choose it as my first choice for a gun battle, it's a blast to shoot. While recoil isn't bad, the sound and muzzle blast is tremendous. You get this huge stupid grin on your face after you fire it.

And yes, it's on my list of things to buy. I want the .50 caliber version with the standard barrel and the chrome finish.

In .44 mag - there is no hype - thats actual.
Its way powerful, big, scary, and accurate.
Scope it and its a true hunting gun for those not wanting a wheel-gun or Single.

Now has anyone here shot a .44 Automag, you know the Dirty Harry gun? That's a weapon I'd like to own someday. How does it compare to a Wildey? I've never shot either, but they are neat looking guns. Also, Coonan makes a .41 magnum gun now, and I've always liked the look of those guns too.

I test-fired a .357 DE some months ago. I intentionally fed it the crappiest reloads I could scrounge up, trying to make it break.

It functioned perfectly.

Big hands: yeah right. I have little paws and had no problems with it. It's about TECHNIQUE, fellows.

No, it's not a packing gun; so what? Is it written somewhere that every pistol must be for carry, or hunting, or target?

The DE fills that "Holy SH!T that's cool!" niche that exists in every single market out there, from guns to cars to computers.

has anybody shot one in the new .440 cor-bon cartridge? when i get my desert eagle i want the one with the inter changeble barrels, and barrels in .41 mag and 440 cor-bon.
