Let see, in the last few years I have played with, 257 Weatherby, 308 long barrel, 308 short barrel, 30/06 short and standard barrel, 7mm Rem mag, 35 Remington, 375 H&H and a 45/70. After a few thousand bucks, bad blood with a couple "would be" gunsmiths that screwed up thee rifles:mad:, the hunting rifles have been settled:).

25/06, 721 Remington 24" 3X9X40
7-08 Savage 110 20" 3X9X40
338 Win Mag Savage 116 24" 3X9X40

The 25/06 covers Dogs to Mule Deer
338 Win Mag cover Mule Deer to Brown Bear
7-08 a great light carbine that also backs up the 25/06 and the 338 Win Mag.

Hey, if it works for you, that's what is important.

I feel that for a long range general purpose rifle, a 7mm Rem Mag, .30-06 or .270 will cover most bases, and a nice .30-30 carbine will cover the shorter range, light weight carrying pack rifle role just fine. Or just get a middle weight .308 and do everything. Then again, where I'm from there's no threat from Brown Bears/Grizzlies.

Ar-223 3x10x50 varmints.
Rem 7600 270win 3x10x50 deer-hogs-b bears
rem 700 300wm 6x24x44 bear-hogs or anything that just needs killin.
454 casull 2x8x20 gereral truck gun.

I don't need much to cover hunting on the North American continent. A .22LR, .223/5.56, .308 and a .338 WinMag cover anything I've ever wanted to go after. Add to that two Winchester Model 12s one in 20 and the other a 12GA and I'm good to go with long guns. All the other rifles I own such as .17HMRs, .22WMRs, more .22LRs and a .32WS Model 94 are in the gun safe just because.

Ok, I forgot about the .22lr.

Ok, take this: Varmints are a problem in some parts, and it might be worthwhile to be able to shoot them. Granted, I've never seen the need to do that, but well. It is a need. Would a .22lr do the varmint job out to 100-ish yards? Is that long enough to do the varmint job, and if not why can't I do it with my .270/7mm Mag/.308? Would a .22 wrm better fill the longer range varmint role, and yet not blow away the tree rats so bad that they are inedible?

Just questions, ya' see...

Your selection and choices makes sense to me. You have a good range there with just three rifles. Mine looks like this:

.223
.308
TBD

I'm not counting the .22LR or the 12 Guage.

TBD, it's a choice between the .375 H&H, .338 Win Mag, and the 9.3x62. I'm leaning towards the 9.3, but it remains to be seen what I end up going with.

Biker

.22lr
22-250 Don't have yet, want this one.
.44 cal Henry
Remington 30.06
AR-15 still looking for this one.

4 or 5 assorted shotguns.

Lefteye,

You've chosen good range of calibers. The only comment I have is the 3-9x40 scope you have on the 25-06. Since it will be for dogs-mule deer, you may want a little more power since you'll be taking shots beyond 200 yards. When you say dogs, not sure if its coyotes or p-dogs, and the p-dogs at 300 yards is quite small with a 3-9 scope.

update

22 lr and 12 gauge, well you can't be an American with out at least one each and more is always better:D
22s
Mossberg 152
Bronco Garcia
Marlin 60
Ruger 10/22

12,
H@R sluggester (Deer) or Hilly Billy Snipper Shotgun
Savage double barrel field work
870 Remington Home Defense

As for the 25/06 scope it will be up graded to a 4X12 this fall.

I like owning rifles so I could never limit myself to just three. You really need a smaller caliber centerfire as well as a rimfire added to your list. I'd probably swap out the .338 Win Mag for the .375 H&H unless that was the one screwed up by the "gunsmiths". I just think the .375 H&H is to classy of a round to dispose of, and IMO it doesn't kick any worse than the .338 Win Mag.

I'm up to 29 long guns right now with the parts on hand to build at least three more rifles. So I can't really just stick to three rifles. I'll probably be selling a few here and there as I try to get down to my favorites. But even if I don't hunt with them I do get a lot of pleasure out of shooting them.

In terms of rifles, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a "gap" in my current inventory for anything in North America:

.22lr
.22 Mag.
.22 Hornet
.223/5.56
.220 Swift
.257 Roberts
.257 Weatherby Mag.
7X64 Brenneke
.30-30 Winchester
.308 Winchester
.30-06 Springfield
.338 Winchester Magnum
.358 Winchester
.45-70 Government

Okay, I don't have anything in .17 cal. and no African big bores but, seriously, just three rifles? :)

338 Win Mag cover Mule Deer to Brown Bear

Yeah you don't have a Garand, nor do I see a 270 Win.

Every red blooded American should have a Garand

Every red blooded Wyomingnite should have a 270
