The Hole Story

Last night I was glancing through one of the gun auction sites. One shotgun caught my attention.

It is a Browning, Model 2000, in 20 gauge. The pictures showed a pretty good looking shotgun except for one thing. There is a hole in it. The hole is located on the left side of the receiver. It looks as though it is a factory thing. Other photos show the bolt on the right side and the loading port at the bottom. So, what in the world is this other opening for? I find it bizzare.

Any Theories?

I have tried to figure out what the hole is for.

It could be a storage area. A person could put extra shells in there. Small birds would also fit. Maybe it was a bizzare way to make the gun lighter.

A friend of mine with considerable shotgun experience and knowledge couldn't figure it out either.

It's a loading gate. You can drop a round into the gate and cycle the bolt chambering the round. Or you can drop in a round and push it into the magazine tube.

They quit making them in 1980 I think. You can still get a copy of the owners manual for them. The B2000 trap was the most popular model, and I have broke a few clays with one that belonged to a older friend of mine that just passed away. he owned 2 B2000's along with some old Beretta's M12's and A5's.
