The Great CCW Handgun Debate-SA,DA,Auto ?

At a young 62 years old I've come to this conclusion.....

I've been shooting & practicing most all my life with
big bore Single Actions and got'n, if I dare say, pretty
fast and accurate at it over the years. I mean it's
sooooooo ingrained in my muscle memory. For me
quick drawing with my SA and thumbing off a fast
2 or 3 with tight accuracy is just faster & easier for
me than squeezing a DA or shooting an auto. In fact,
it's so ingrained in me that if I pulled an Auto or DA
I'd probably try and thumb them too-Not Good LOL!

Anyway my point is this.....For CCW and SD purposes
practice, practice, practice, with what y'all are best with.

I just LOVE my Ruger NV Montado 45-In fact, it sleeps
in between my wife and I every night-Hey I'm a cowboy.

How about you ?

So, at the risk of sounding really naive, I'll stick my neck out here and ask our friends:
We all know know DA revolver owners practice shooting duel action, but what's the harm in practicing a quick draw, thumb it and fire SA? I mean, if that's what works for some people?

Nova-Good Question.....

Thumbing is a practice well known by many SASS & CAS
shooters that shoot SA's. The SA will allow you to hold
the trigger down while thumb fanning the hammer.....

Wanna see fast-Here's a link to one of my hero's.....

He actually gets 2 bullets off while the first is still running
down the barrel ! If this is not quick I don't know what is.

This post may open up a whole can of worms about practice, muscle memory, and the human ability to react under stress and adrenaline. I carry a 1911 for most of the time I have carried (both with a CCW and not...) because the pistol and it's manual of arms just fits me, I am not a natural revolver person, SA or DA.

Shooting an SA revolver quickly isn't the biggest challenge, IMO; the biggest challenge is reloading. I am very slow at unloading and reloading via a loading gate. That is what would take me the longest, as far as developing muscle memory.

So... I'd rather put that training time into scoring faster hits with my DA revolvers and SA or DAO autos.

To each his own.

I csarry different guns at different times. I do carry my Ruger Montado and Birdshead Vaquero at times in my Simply Rugged holster...pic of the stainless boys.
Ignore the blue Taurus in the middle.

That makes the part where he shoots the two balloons eight feet apart even MORE impressive!

Your right Colt 45 practice with what you got.

I practice much more with defensive caliber semi autos than revolvers so thats my choice. But if a revolver is what works best. Then that is what that person should go with.

Prefer single-action, whether in autos or revolvers because I feel I have better accuracy. However, as the OP suggested, practice makes perfect! You can learn to do any of them well.

I would love to have a revolver in .45LC... such pretty guns and such a versatile cartridge. Good choice. :D

I shoot mostly in SA mode with my SA and SA/DA handguns but for CC, I prefer DAO or at least DA first shot. I just feel more secure having the long DA pull than the short SA. My groups are better when shooting SA only than shooting DA only but the I do not think that the difference is significant in an SD situtation (I expect that things (target and shooter) are going to be moving to better/worsen a shot anyway).
