The German Police trials produced 3 great guns...

the Walther P5, the SIG 225 and the HK P7. True gun enthusiasts appreciate their strengths and weaknesses. But, which one is used more by law enforcement (probably European) agencies? Which one do you think is used more by private owners?

Probably the Sig on both counts, but my personal favorite of the three is the HK. Although I do also own the Walther, I haven't shot it yet. THe P7 is just an excellent and well designed and made pistol.

I'd guess the P7 to be more widely owned currently than the Sig P225, and certainly more than the Walther P5.

All three are really good guns, without doubt.

Personally, I like the P7 best.

I've owned all three and got ride of the HK (was never reliable:( ), Sig(brain fart) and now only have a consecutive pair of p5s
:D .

Cheers,

ts

I have both the P5, and the P6 (Sig P225). I hope to add the P7 in the future.
The P6 is a better every day pistol than the P5, but the Walther is a very nice addition to a collection. The P5 is just an amazingly fine piece of machine work, and engineering.

Walther produced in excess of 100,000 P5's for one of the Scandanavian countries. I'd have to check again to see which one it was.

It is used in Germany, but not as widely as the P6.

Baden Wurtemburg is one state in Germany that did use it at one time.

Pretty sure the SIGs were/are the more widely used/issued pistol of the bunch in Germany and Wesern Europe. Since the Wall came down, the Makarov or CZ75 may be top dog? 1975 was a very good year for guns BTW; IIRC the Beretta 92, CZ75 and SIG P220 series all debuted?

BTW, the Graubunden Police, the largest Swiss canton (county-state) switched from SIG to Glock. ;)

Unfortunately, the Europeans love of the 225 continues. SiG does not even list the 225 in their lineup over here anymore because they are over committed with EU orders.

My 225 is wonderful.

Smart money would probably be on the P6, P7, and P5 in that order of commonality. Last year in Munich, it was P6s at the airport and P7s in town when looking at the holsters of passing Politzi.

Wonderful pistols all!

Last year in Munich, it was P6s at the airport and P7s in town when looking at the holsters of passing Politzi.

That's because the German Federal Border Guard (in charge of airport security) issues the P6, and the Bavarian Polizei issues the P7 PSP.

The most widely issued pistol of the "triumvirate" is the P6 (P225), as it is issued by several high-population German states like North Rhine Westphalia. Each of the 16 states got to choose which pistol they would issue to their police, and the P6 got picked by a slight majority. I think the P7 PSP and the P5 are about tied.

the p6 was the most widely adopted in europe and many american LE departments (who have adopted the 226/229) issue them to officers with smaller hands or detectives

the p7 has the largest cult following

the p5 has become a niche gun (walther collectors)

as long as we are running the P-series I think we need to include the venerable P-35 in the group. It may be old but it still is the slimmest, best pointing, hicapacity 9mm out there.

I second jar on the P-35.....it's my favorite with the P7 a close second....hey, all my pistols start with p.....! come to think of it, the only other pistol I want is a P9....add them up and you get a P-51....the only plane I ever wanted....hmmmmmm.

sierra - i believe that the hk usp came out well after the germany police trials...the only canidates were the p5, p6 and p7

jar - i also like how the p35 feels in the hand but i just can't get them to shoot for me. for so reason they keep shooting low when i use my "standard grip". on the other hand the cz-75 clones all shoot and point great. is the p-35 much slimmer than the cz-75?

9mmepiphany,

The USP-9c won a recent contract and is known as the P10 in polezei service.

jar,

Kind of a stretch sticking the GP-35 in this thread, nicht wahr? ;)
