The future of the battle rifle

Hello all, I have a request directed at any helpful soul out there. I'm a AFROTC student with an assignment to give a speech on the future of the battle rifle: what will our government likely be employing in the next 10-20 years? I have been doing my own research and am loving it, (firearms are a passion of mine) but any additional resourses would be greatly appreciated. If anyone knows of any books, authors, websites, magazines, periodicals, etc. regarding advanced concepts currently being developed as well as any plausible ideas down the road, I would be most appreciative! Thank you!

Do you mean battle rifle or assault carbine?

If you mean a battle rifle like the M14, you might look at what the russians have decided. They presently use a Dragunov Sniping Rifle that was expected to shoot 2MOA with quality ammo. It functions well and is intended to extend the range of the average rifle squad. It is not really up to our sniper standards and really functions as a battle rifle.

To make an assault weapon like the M16 family into battle rifles will require changing the caliber to something more potent.

The real advances will come with new systems to allow a person with less training to hit a distant target. But in 10 to 20 years with advances in electronics it is hard to predict how this will be done.
