If anyone is going to be in these areas, it'd be interesting to show up with pro-gun signs and the "No guns in this house/car
. . ." signs and bumper stickers.

2000 P Street, N.W., Suite 712
Washington, D.C. 20036 www.firstmonday2000.com (202) 371-1999

On April 20, 1999, 12 students and one teacher were shot down by their teenage schoolmates in Littleton, Colorado. Twenty-eight-year-old Songha Willis of Philadelphia was robbed, shot, and killed on February, 2, 2000. In October 1999, 15-year-old Jennifer Garvey of Maryland shot herself in the head as part of a suicide pact with her boyfriend.

No community, no family, no American is unaffected by gun violence. Gun violence claims the lives of more than 30,000 people each year and injures an estimated 90,000 more. More than 3,500 young people die each year from gun violence - ten every day.

The good news is that, now, more and more Americans are getting energized and mobilized. First Monday 2000: Unite to End Gun Violence on October 2 is a national day of action to end gun violence and the beginning of a two-year gun violence campaign, organized by the Alliance for Justice and Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR). To date, more than 350 events around the country are being planned and nearly 300 colleges and universities are participating. The centerpiece of the day's events is a new film that documents the epidemic of gun violence, America: Up In Arms, by award-winning filmmakers Rory Kennedy and Liz Garbus, featuring actor Martin Sheen.

Some of the days highlights are:

In Denver, Colorado, former Congressman Mike Barnes, National President of Handgun Control, Inc., will be the featured speaker at a community forum at the University of Denver Law School that will address Colorado's pending ballot initiative to close the gun show loophole. The forum includes a screening of "America: Up In Arms," and a panel discussion with US Attorney Tom Strickland, Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter, victims of gun violence, and student and community leaders. The University of Denver event caps off a day of events that include public forums at Colorado University Law School and at the University of Colorado Health Science Center. Denver's First Monday events are co-sponsored by PSR - Colorado, Chapter, SAFE Colorado, SAFE Students, Million Mom March, Colorado GAP, www.doitforthekids.org, Black Law Student Association, Latino Law Student Association, Public Interest Student Association, and the National Lawyers Guild.

The Portland, Maine event will be a day-long, comprehensive conference sponsored by Maine Citizens Against Gun Violence, the Maine Public Health Association, University of Maine School of Law, the Maine chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility and others. Speakers and panel participants include Maine Attorney General Drew Ketterer, Portland Police Chief Michael Chitwood, and Dr. Robert MacAfee, former president of the American Medical Association. Panels will be held throughout the day on the subjects of youth gun violence, guns in schools, litigation, suicide prevention, and legislation concerning firearms. "First Monday 2000: Working Together to Reduce Gun Violence" will take place at the Eastland Park hotel in Portland on Monday, October 2.

In Hartford, Connecticut, Attorney General Richard Blumenthal will host a panel discussion and film screening at the state capitol. The event is sponsored by the University of Connecticut Schools of Medicine and Public Health, in conjunction with the Connecticut Childhood Injury Prevention Center, the Connecticut Public Health Association, Greater Hartford Violence Prevention Coalition, and the Million Mom March/ Central Connecticut Chapter. After a screening of the First Monday 2000 documentary, "America: Up in Arms," there will be a panel discussion featuring State Representative Michael P. Lawlor, Dr. Anthony Morgan, Director of Surgery and Trauma Services at St. Francis Medical Center, and Chief Thomas Sweeney of the Glastonbury Police Department. Following the panel discussion State Representative Barnaby Horton will lead a candlelight vigil outside the state capitol. A University of Connecticut medical student will read an official proclamation against gun violence and in support of First Monday, signed by Governor John G. Rowland.

Morgantown, West Virginia's First Monday program entitled, "Alleviating Gun Violence: A Responsibility of Health Care Professionals and the Community," is a project of the West Virginia University Schools of Public Health and Medicine. Held on the West Virginia University campus, the event will feature WVU faculty Dr. Robert D'Alessandri, Vice President for Health Sciences Center, and Dr. Alan Ducatman, Chair of the Community Medicine Department. Dr. Jack Bergstein of the Department of Surgery will present "Firearm Violence Prevention 101." The program will feature pictures and documentation of gun violence injuries. Coordinators will distribute brochures and stickers on gun violence.

Gee, & they somehow glossed over the fact that we will also have, on the CO state capitol west steps, Consitution Monday - in direct response.

Notable speakers, comradery, coalition-building/networking & a good time to be had by all.

Well & tell y'all what. Yup. This family has been affected by gun violence (The Wife's "dad" smoked himself with his own .38 revolver (& frankly, good ridance - saved me the trip), I personally "defended" this country with my own form of "gun violence," and we've a story or two to tell that will just be held in reserve "for later") ... but, so what & what the hell has any of that to do with us!?

The biggest impact to this family regarding the "gun violence" bit is that some A-hole/s are trying to take away "this family's" firearms (or restrict our ability to carry, purchase, possess, etc.) because they are a bunch of .... ahem .... dicorum prevent my further outburst.

From The Moms to the ends of this green earth, we are under attack as never before. Anybody doesn't yet get it & ain't on the freedom train is a fool or worse ....

I'd just like to be nice now .... hugs to everyone .... ;)

Forst MOnday is having one of these meetings here in Houston, and we plan to be there with them.

I'm not sure how many of the generally apathetic gun owners I can get to attend but we're giving it a shot. If there is anyone within reasonable distance to Houston that can attend, we really need your help.

NRA? Good. Now join the GOA!

The NRA is our shield, the GOA will be our sword.

I'm trying to get the fledgling Washington State chapter of TRT involved. So far I haven't been able to get any info out of the First Monday people about the who/what/where in Seattle.
