The cx4 Storm

Hello all. I have the px4 Storm in the .40 s&w and am contemplating whether or not to get the cx4 or a cz 75bd 9mm.

Anybody here have any experience with the cx4? I like the fact that I can use the same mags and it looks like a pretty decent gun for SD and the occasional trip to the range.

Any input??

My wife bought a CX-4 in 9mm when they first came out and she didn't shoot it much. It just sat in one of our gun safes.

I got it out and took it to the range a few weeks ago with plans to let my 11 year old grandson try it.
Before I would let him shoot it, I wanted to run it through its paces to see if it was going to be easy for him to shoot and would be safe for him.

I was pleasently surprised at how well it handled.
It was really fun to shoot and incredibly easy to take down and clean afterward without any tools.
It can be set up to charge and eject from either right or left without any tools.

When my grandson got to shoot it at the next range session, he sat down with it and started to put shot after shot into the bull at 25 and then at 50 yards. He must have shot 150 rounds through it and really loved it.
It was light, easy for him to mout and easy for him to control.
He had no trouble loading the magazines.
It is now his favorite.
He is used to trying to shoot his father's ARs and some of them have heavy barrels so they are a bit heavy for him to handle.

A while ago, Beretta came out with a barrel shroud that bolts on and makes it look absolutely great. One of the guys at the range has one and showed it to us while my grandson was shooting. The barrel shroud is now on my grandson's list of things to get.

One thing I missed, if you have a 40 S&W PX-4 you would to get a 40 S&W CX-4 if you wanted to share magazines. I would recommend that you stay with the same caliber for both your pistol and carbine.

The 9mm and the 40 S&W are essentially the same size and should handle the same way so my comments above would still apply.
I believe that the 45 CX-4 is just slightly larger but should also have the same basic feel.

I recently shot the 9 mm storm carbine and I was very impressed by it as well! Very accurate, easy to shoot, felt well made. My wife was also a huge fan of it.

I have a CX-4 that takes the 96 mags. If I ever purchase a PX4, its fairly simple to switch out the mag well to accomodate PX4 mags. This carbine is one of my favorites to take out to the range. It's an absolute blast to shoot and its has good accuracy out to at least 35 yards (indoor range). Shoots fairly cheap ammo and isnt picky either. I have fed it Winchester white box in 165 and 180 grain, Federals, Remington HP's and whatever I choose to load up myself with no problems.

There are a couple of things I didnt like but werent enough to be deal breakers. The stock trigger group is mostly a plastic affair and gives a fairly hefty trigger pull with a long gravely creep. I corrected this by ordering an aftermarket trigger group from Brownells that came with an adjustable trigger and a metal hammer (vs the stock plastic). Now all of those issues are no more. The next thing I didnt really like was the fact that the CX4 has a plastic guide rod. It never presented any reliability issues other than in my own head, but it just so happens that Brownells also carries an aftermarket guiderod replacement kit that I installed. I am certainly no gunsmith, but I had both of these mods installed in under an hour with basic tools.

Take care!
Clyde

Thank you for the replies everybody. I am certainly leaning towards picking one of these bad boys up very soon.

Ozzie, so you would definitely go with Aimpoint over eotech or acog??

I purchased a CX4 Storm in 9mm to match my Px4 "G" type 9mm pistol. The CX4 is a very nice carbine; it is easy to field strip, and has a definite appeal to new shooters. I got mine during a Beretta promo at the LGS, and got 5 free mags thrown in the deal.

I think Clyde is referring to the Sierra Papa mod kits; the maker is a poster on the Beretta forums. I didn't find them to be a dramatic improvement, but good enough to buy and install both kits. How well you like them depends on the stock trigger; CX4 stock carbines vary quite a bit in trigger feel; some are good, some aren't.

While I thoroughly enjoy my 75bd, in your case I'd recommend the CX4 purchase. Try to find one used though, they're awfully darn expensive.

I work for a smith and repair firearms, so I get the opportunity to handle many different types of firearms when they come into the shop for repair or upgrading. A few months ago I had a CX4 in the shop. I was very pleased at the fit and finish, and how the firearm was assembled. I would definitely recommend it for a casual or advanced firearm for anyone, I liked it that much. A bit heavy, but very good balance makes it controllable shooting offhand, and very accurate.

I would take an ACOG over anything built by anyone. But they are just too expensive for me. I picked up the aimpoint from a sale that was asking 1/2 what it cost new.
Having shot my SL8 with an ACOG (A fiend let me try it) A 3 X30 I think,,, I was very impressed but with the price they ask, I have a wife to think about and if I spent that much on a scope, I have to worry about that scream you hear in the night,,, It might be your own. So I ended up getting the upper handle from HK with the integral scope.
I like the Aimpoint but before I would spend the going price for one (500$) I would save my money and get an ACOG.
Eotech makes a great product, but I’m not a big fan of holographic sights. It’s more of a personal thing. The only ones I have tried are cheap ones and they worked well. Even had one on the Beretta and have several setting on my computer table. Just don’t care for them.
My thinking is always, get what works for you and buy the best you can afford. If you can’t afford it then save and buy it when you can.

I understand they want to support their own company but.... it's hard to ignore what magazines are the most prevalent, least expensive, work the best, and even have higher capacity models.... it's just too bad you can't get a Storm that takes Glock mags.

And I wish they made one in .357 SIG.

Or 10mm.

If you somehow combined those, either a .357 that used G31 mags or a 10mm that used G20 mags, I would have to buy one! Might even go for a .45 if it used G21 mags!
