The Bullet Hole (KS)

Just went to The Bullet Hole shooting range in Overland Park for the first time yesterday after moving to Kansas recently. It's a great facility, nice staff,

Thanks to everyone who recommended that place to me.

Welcome, "divil", to the Sunflower State!

My opinion of The Bullet Hole is similarly positive, with but one small caveat:

When it's real hot or real cold outside, you'll wonder if the range portion (not the store) is air-conditioned or heated.

Then again, I guess we all need to learn to shoot in less-than-ideal conditions...

Yeah it was a little toasty in there yesterday. I'm glad I didn't try it 3 weeks ago before the weather cooled down...

Glad you had a good experience there. My experience was just the opposite. Their guns are way overpriced and the staff could care less that I was there to buy a gun. They have a monopoly in the area because there are no other gun shops around overland park. Go to Gunners Firearms in Raymore, Missouri or Show Me Shooters in Claycomo, Missouri. I have had much better experiences in those shops.

I haven't shot there in some 15 years... I left the state some time ago. It was always a friendly store.

Enjoy the heat of Ks my friend, it's the one thing I don't miss. :)

Some years ago when I lived, worked, & nearly went broke in overland park I would visit the bullet hole on occasion. Money was tight & I had no handgun of my own. They would rent me a used glock for $5 and let me plink away till I ran out of ammo. It was a great stress-relieving escape from a job that I never should have taken.

Again, welcome to KC! I've lived in Kansas most of my life, aside from a few diversions to Nebraska, Louisiana and Texas. I live on the Missouri side of KC now. I used to belong to a very nice gun club over in Topeka...Capital City Gun Club. They had several great outdoor ranges, and I really missed those when I moved to KC.

Since then, I've shot pretty much exclusively at The Bullet Hole. I've never bought a gun there, as their prices seem to be MSRP+. But, the guys at the range counter seem to be pretty cool, and I never get asked what I'm shooting, what kind of ammo I have, or any of that type of BS. No hourly fees, I can shoot all day for $9 if I wish.

The range is ventilated by bringing in outside air and pulling it directly from the firing line end, down through the lanes and out the other end. So, if it's hot outside, it's hot inside. Likewise, if it's cold outside...you get the picture. In the wintertime, they pull out the rocket ship propane heaters and fire them up, but if you're a couple of lanes down from one of those, it can still be a bit chilly.

These 3 days (W-Th-F) are supposed to be up around 100 degrees, so I think I'd defer my shooting until this weekend or next week, when temps are supposed to go down into the 80's again.

I just went up there to sight in my new scope for the 10/22 and police have it taped off and channel 4 out front. Looks like another suicide. :(

This is why I don't like shooting at this place , but it is down the street from where I live and work.

I just saw a news headline that stated that they found "2 dead" inside the shooting range at about 11:30am. Murder/suicide? Argument that got out of hand? 2 gangbangers that happened to notice each other?

I hate to hear stuff like this. We all suffer for it.

UPDATE: It appears to be a man and a woman who came into the business at the same time...looks more like a murder/suicide.

Just a heads up to those who go to this range. There was a murder-suicide here this morning. Just another suicide on the bulletholes resume. This makes 3 as far as I am aware of.

Edit: Woops, looks like I just rehashed what was already mentioned.

I heard that also on the news. I am wondering if this is some sort of new (and tragic) record for this sort of business.

Supposedly they require a membership to shoot there and you can't shoot for 24 hours after you sign up. This is heresay as I do not shoot there or buy from them because of my bad experince there. I am not sure if these two people brought their own firearm or were members and rented one.

They changd the rules because of 2 previous suicides at the range The last suicide there was in march of 2010.

Wow, while trying to find the other one I saw that there have been several suicides at many other gun ranges across the country. I was planning on going to the range tomorrow to shoot my new .38 special, I wonder if it will be a hassle because of this.

Just read an article in the local paper About a couple that meet online and were shot dead at the Bulley Hole shooting range They don't know if it is a murder suicde are double murders

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/09/07/couple-who-met-online-found-dead-at-kansas-shooting-range/

The shooting range has seen other killings, the Star reported, including the suicide of a man in March 2010 and the deaths of three people in 1997 who killed themselves with guns they rented there.

Not sure if I'd want to shoot there !

They do make you wait 24 hours after signing up for a membership ,seen a lot of people complain about it as they usually go in there to shoot that day.

I was in there today a little more quiet than usual, but I did get my rifle sighted in.

Yes, apparently these 2 people had met online, and the guy had recently moved in with the woman. According to the woman's mother, everything seemed to be going peachy keen. So, no one knows why the guy apparently flipped out and did what he did.

My sympathies lie with the business at this point. What a stigma and unnecessary hassle it must be to have this happen in one's establishment. I have read of this type of thing happening at other shooting ranges across the country. Without trying to be crass about it, I only wish that those who feel the need to resort to such drastic measures would, somehow, have enough consideration for those around them, and for the people who run the business, than to choose to do this in a public place or retail establishment.

I have no ill will towards The Bullet Hole. I've been a member there for 7 years or so, and I've never had a problem or experienced any uncomfortable situations. I can shoot all day if I so choose for one price, and they don't have a lot of silly rules and policies. It's also about my only shooting option around here, so I hate to see this kind of thing happen.

A reminder to everyone that throwing a couple of *** into a profanity DOES NOT make it acceptable for use at TFL.

TFL Rule 2:

If it isn't obvious which words are inappropriate, the forum software is equipped with a language filter to assist you. The filter is not there to prompt you to invent creative ways to defeat it. If the filter doesn't like the original word, then find a better way to say what you want to say and edit your post accordingly. Posts containing words caught by the filter or containing "words" creatively skirting the filter will either be edited or deleted."
