The best semi-auto?

I'm looking for a new .308win semi-auto rifle and I was wondering what you guys feel is the best in the following categories. Treat each category as a separate issue and it's o.k. if the same rifle doesn't fit them all.

1) Accuracy

2) Reliability (i.e. no feed problems, etc.)

3) Serviceability (i.e. easy to repair with reasonable parts costs)

I'm more familiar with the AR type rifles such as the Armalite AR10T and the KMC SR-25. I've been told that the SR-25 is more accurate, but isn't as reliable as the AR10T. And the mags for the SR-25 cost a lot more. I'm also somewhat aware of what's available in the M1A, although I've heard you've got to pay quite a bit to get them to shoot really well. I know very little about the H&K style rifles other than I couldn't afford a PSG-1. And I know almost nothing about the other battle rifles such as the FN-FAL, etc.

Thanks for your help!

Take a look at Boston T. Party's 'Boston's Gun Bible' ... an extensive discussion of .308 battle rifles. In that man's opinion, the FAL is tops, but the M1A is very, very strong as well. Interesting read if you've never seen it ... well worth the money, in my opinion. See http://www.javelinpress.com .

One thing you might find fascinating about the FAL ... how about $5 for full cap mag's?

In truth, it would be great to get one of each, eh? M1A and an FAL ... dream ...

What can a FAL be bought for brand new, with good
quality? I seem to remember dsarms being the best around,
but I think theirs were around $1500. I do see that
they have two austrian versions (type 1 & type 2
receiver ??) for $1000. Is that pretty good and why
are they cheaper than their "normal" versions? The
basic m1a is about $1050 or so (synthetic stock...
is that heretical?), just wondering if the FAL can
be bought for a similar amount of money?

1. accuracy - DSA match grade FAL
2. reliability - HK 91, almost as reliable as an AK...you can feed it dirt
3. serviceability - FAL because the parts are cheaper, but HK is easier to maintain

howardw - the DSA "house guns" are made from all domestically produced parts; "american made FAL" so they control all tolerences. they also made parts guns from austrian parts kits, american parts to qualify for sale domestically and brazilian receivers...also very nice as the imported parts are top qualkity.

dZ,
Thanks for the pointer...do you have one of these
or have seen/shot one? How do you think they compare
to dsarms, which seems to be the standard by which others
are judged? Thanks...

I'm really liking the VEPR II rifles right now...

FAL is number one for a .308... No question in my mind. The M-14 pattern gun is great too - but I am not a huge fan.
I love the G3 types as well. But the FAL just a touch more so. If you dont want to spend all that much and still get a good .308 that will compair accuracy wise to the best and have good reliability that rivals the best... then there is a rifle you should consider:
super_vepr_308.jpg

This is the Super VEPR and when I was at Robinson Armements talking to the head guru, he said matter of factly that this gun is just as accurate of not more so than most Match M1 types. Thats a bolt statement that he backed up with a file of targets. Yup.
Read about it: http://www.robarm.com/supervepr.htm
If that one is too much, take a look at this one:
http://www.robarm.com/vepr308_w_scope.jpg
This has a lot of friendly brown wood and is rather handsome for an ugly AK...
Now, the one I like:
308_VEPR_II_Side.jpg

No thumb hole - very accurate - looks ferocious. I love it.
You can study all about these over here: http://www.robarm.com/
and at AK-47.net...
Good luck picking just one! :D

Springfield Armory M1A with all GI parts except the commercial receiver sporting a GI synthetic stock, GI nylon sling and GI magazine.

i don't have a FAL yet

Dan's Sporting goods has a good rep on Fal files
They are parts guns, done for a fair price.

i do have a .308 Vepr
It's Klingon technology!

The M-14. Mags aren't as expensive as a lot of poeple make them out to be ($31 from Coles) and there are a LOT of poeple out there that can work on them too. Accurate, reliable, rugged, parts aren't hard to find, excellent trigger, sights, ambidextrious magazine release and safety, brass isn't thrown into the next state or mangled, even in the post-ban rifles you get a flash suppressor, and you can get them in different configurations like the bush rifle, standard, loaded packages, NM and Super match rifles or if you have a pre-ban you can even get the E2 stock and bipod if you really want to irk Rosie O'piglet. LOL The FAL comes in at a close second if only the sights and trigger were better. Also, those $5 mags can end at any time. Bush isn't as pro-gun as the NRA will tell you he is and has stated that he would have no problem banning imports of high capacity magazines! :( Same applies to imported parts as well.
