In the version up this morning it referred to the militants as carrying AK-46 rifles. This is unfortunate as I was hoping to finally have an answer to the question of whether an AK-47 is sufficient for defending against bear attacks.
As we all know, the AK-46 was the underpowered version the Soviets rejected due to it's inability to defend Partisans against the capitalist bears of Central Asia.
