Went to an invite-only political wranglings class put on by our state affiliate w/GOA a couple weeks back. I've had some pretty good dealings with activism & personal meetings with politicians, etc. & thought I was pretty savy to a point.
I was & I wasn't - moreso not.
Won't go into the whole ins & outs of it all but one point stuck in my mind more than any other so I'll pass it on for your information & comments (please).
The manin gist of the class was how a politician thinks & why he/she does, what motivates 'em, etc. & most importantly, how to get what you want out of 'em.
I always though that if you could get the information, the truth, out to enough folks, the whole issue re gun control would be a moot point & we'd sweep away all the bad laws, etc. Pretty naive in many ways.
Politicians react to two simple things: pain & pleasure. They get pleasure from the public "celebrity status" as being a pol, the $s they get to dole out & the power that all weilds + some more stuff.
They get pain out of being publicly (moreso than in provate ) humiliated & more than anything, losing their job = being unelected. In most every instance, their entire driving force is to be re-elected.
Politicians could give a rat's patutity about your views if you are not registered to vote because you cannot un-elect him & who cares what you think.
The masses do not matter one whit in the political make-up & educating the masses is pretty much a waste of time (besides being extremely expensive & time-comsuming).
Your time can much be better spent by working hard on any politician you have access to (a bit about that in a few).
This breakdown is %s of everybody - not %s of the %s, if you catch my drift. & it's not super-accurate - only a "kinda average" across the country & political districts. YMMV. It appears to hold pretty close in most though.
Of all the people in the country (100%), only ~60% are even eligible to vote.
Only ~40% are registered voters.
Only ~24% actually vote.
8% vote the straight Democratic ticket, while ~8% vote the Republican ticket.
Leaving ~8% outstanding with 2% doing the third party bit.
That leaves us with the 6% "undecided" which actually ever swings the deciding vote.
Of that 6%, one only needs half +1 vote (that 3% +1) to elect whomever you want.
Obviously, that "whomever you want" should be one that you have researched (possibly even encouraged to run for election), stand fast for your cause & won't falter.
It is much more effective to put your energy into electing "your guy" (& Ladies, do forgive for the "he, him" stuff - it's just easier than typing he/she. transpose as you see fit.) than it is to attempt to sway, educate, argue, etc. the masses. For one thing, you won't sway them, you won't educate them & to that old quote, " .... & it annoys the pig."
Mobilizing those that already think as you do to get that one person elected is THE singlemost effect tactic.
This class was one of the most eye-opening 8 hrs I've spent in many a year.
Comments, critiques, etc. most welcome.
