Thanks for the help you two offered on tuning my 1911 extractor. No more feeding problems in 300 rounds of factory loads and reloads. I now have a new problem. I don't know if this is a big deal or not, so please let me know. Before the I fixed the extractor problem I could merely pull back on the slide, the slide stop would fall, and I could shoot. Well, the slide stop won't do that anymore. Should I worry about this? Thanks again for all of the help you guys offer here.

Hi, Aztec,

When you reload and pull back the slide, the slide itself forces the slide stop out of engagement. That is why the edge of the slide stop hole and the front edge of the stop are sloped. The function of the slide stop plunger is simply to keep the stop in place when it is down so it doesn't jump up and engage when it shouldn't.

If you could describe the problem a little more, maybe I could be more specific on help.

Hey, Jim. Well, when I pull back on the slide and release it, it won't go forward into battery. It has always done this and caught me by surprise. I understand what it's supposed to do, but it won't do it anymore. I didn't mess with the plunger tube, change magazines, or slide stop. Only removed the extractor. Did I screw something up without knowing it?

It's always had a shok buff. I decided to leave it in since it ran okay, but I thought of taking it out, too. Maybe I'll try that and see what happens. Thanks.

Well, I just took out the shok buff and the slide stop drops when I pull back on the slide. Now, at times, it seems to not want to go fully into battery. I'm just going to replace the recoil spring and leave out the shok buff. Opinions?

I've had one 1911 that didn't like the Wilson Blue shok-buff (about .125 thk). I switched to the Hiett Red shok-buff (.090 thk) and it functioned fine. I like the buffs so I just use the thinner ones.
