Thanks for the Ammo Advice: 38special

On a thread a few weeks ago, someone was asking what ammo to use in .38spc for self defense. The overall opinion seemed to lean toward Win 158 grain LSWCHP.

I finally had some "spare" cash and dropped by the local gun shop.

Very pleased to find this ammo available for $8 for 50 rounds. Only slightly more expensive than the 158 gr LRN I use for plinking.

I'm particularly pleased since the carry ammo for my .45 is something like $18 for 25 rounds, and I'm used to paying a premium for SD ammo.

Now if I can find some el-cheapo plinking stuff for my .45 I'll be a happy camper. (the reloading gear is going to have to wait until early 2001...) :(

Thanks for the pointer...

Hmmmmm Maybe I'll Stick with Speer Lawman

I can get 1000 rounds of Speer Lawman .45 230 FMJ for $215 at my local store... sounds like I'm not likely to do better until I start cranking the stuff out myself. Thanks for the URL, though... it is nice to be able to compare prices.

Moss,

Where in the world do you live??? 8 bucks a box????

Gunshop in Wichita where I buy my ammo charges 19.99:(

That's for the +P load......

good motivation for reloading (practice ammo anyway)

I live in central NC

I have a box of Speer Lawman I bought over the counter last week from that small shop I mentioned. The tag says $11.50.

The price drops to $10.75 or so if you buy by the case of 20 boxes.

Heck, sounds like you are getting a raw deal. I can get that "yellow box" Remington UMC .45 for about $14 a box at the local Wal-Mart.

(PS: I wonder if this thread should be continued in the General Handgun forum???)

Hey Moss,

You can actually get Lawman Speer 230gr .45acp for cheaper at http://ammoman.com. It's only $209.00 for 1000rds, and that includes shipping! And they also don't charge sales tax, unless you're in NJ.

My wife and I were at a local Carson City NV Wal-Mart she picked up a 100 round box of Remington UMC 38 Special +P 125gr semi-jktd hollow point for like 20 bucks. I think its a pretty good SD ammo. Its very accurate and inexpensive to practice with.
