I came here a couple months ago looking for advice on buying my first handgun. I was convinced I wanted a Taurus M85. Since I am a new shooter, most of you did your best to talk me out of it and persuade me, instead to think about something bigger. I listened, and bought a GP100. I have been at the range with it several times since the snow melted. Today I had the chance to go to the range with my friend, who's S&W 38 snub I feel in love with in the beginning. I shot it again today, and was amazed at how jarring it felt compared to my bigger, heavier GP100.

So, thanks for the helpful advice everyone.

The Ruger GP100 is a great revolver.

If you want something smaller, but easier to shoot than a S&W snub, try the Ruger SP101 357. Put a Hogue rubber grip on it and it'll become your favorite gun.

The light weight J frames with the small grips do have a lot sharper snap to them. But I also find that by using a larger three finger replacement grip takes a lot of that away. It is still a bigger felt recoil than that of your heavier GP 100 but easier to manage. If you plan to use it for CCW the larger grips do require bigger pockets for pocket carry but IWB carry is easy with a good holster.

nothing wrong with the Taurus either, they are reliable and accurate pistols, but nowhere near the craftsmanship of a GP100. it's hard to beat the GP, but don't hesitate to grab a m85 if you find a good deal for something to plink and possibly carry. I have one that my step-dad has had for decades and its still a fine shooting gun. I also have the Taurus poly 357 for carry and has help up nicely to thousands of rounds and is very accurate despite very punishing recoil with full .357 loads, feels like you caught a baseball at 90 miles an hour after each shot. I usually recommend the GP if someone wants a full-size wrecking ball, they are incredibly built guns. glad you like it and congrats on getting into the "sport".

I feel like the bias against Taurus must have started before I got into the sport, because I am on Taurus numbr four and have had 0 issues with the guns or the company. but I have only been shooting 4 years, so I don't know if the hate stems from the past. regardless, they ain't no Rooger

I too went thru what you did the past 3 months and I also got the GP100 4" 357.
I dumpt a Taurus and a Windicator for this GP and never looked back. Best buy I've made in years. This is a very good forum and if you pay attention you'll pick up a ton of knowledge that works. Ok you guys, give me my 25 cents.
