Texas resident living in NC

I am a active duty Marine living in North Carolina but am a texas resident with a valid texas drivers lisence. I was wondering if it is possible to purchase a handgun from Texas and have it shipped to my home in North Carolina? If so can I just have it shipped to me or does it have to go through other channels?

In NC, active duty military may be able to apply for a permit, you could try that route first.

By the way, thank you.

At Fort Bragg, I believe the provost marshal's office supplied the forms used for active duty personnel to apply for NC pistol purchase permits. I'm not sure which office at your base will have the forms, but the point is there is a mechanism for active duty non-residents to buy handguns in NC. It might be easier than the long-distance purchase, and shipping.

Simply having a Texas DL does not make you a Texas resident for the purposes of buying a firearm, you must actually reside there.

ATF considers you a resident of the state in which you make your home. If you are active duty military, your state of residence is also the state where your permanent duty station is located.

It is possible to have two states of residence, meaning you would be considered a resident of NC while living there, and if you have a weekend home in Texas you would be considered a Texas resident while there on the weekend.

If you are not actually a resident of Texas you cannot acquire a handgun there, but Federal law allows you to purchase one in North Carolina. You would need to take a government issued photo ID and a copy of your permanent duty orders to the dealer in NC.

You can purchase a handgun in Texas, but it would need to be shipped to a NC dealer who will transfer it to you in North Carolina.

Just take your military ID, and a copy of your PCS to the local sheriffs department, and apply for a pistol purchase permit. After you get the permit, go to a FFL and purchase your firearm. No problem.

Since your perminant duty station is in NC now, the FFL will treat your this as your resinece for purchase purpose. Also you should take your military ID and a copy of your PCS with you to the FFL.

Thank you for your service Marine...Plus one on the NC permit application process. The local sheriff should be able to help you. Rod

Thanks sir. You will like NC.

I'm a NC resident. You will just need to go to the sheriff's office like these guys have already said. They usually get you permits back in a week where I live, should be about the same down your way. It's $5 per pistol permit.

Do you have a TX CCH? That might change things. I can buy pistols on my NC CCH, I'm not sure if that works for states with reciprocity or not.

Also, check out the Riverview Cafe, which is pretty close to the base. It's some of the best NC seafood in the area. :)

Thanks for your service.
