WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Texas leads
the nation in the number of gun shows,
machine guns, licensed firearms retailers
and manufacturers, according to a
report released Wednesday by a
gun-control group.
The report, "Gunland USA," was
compiled by the Washington-based Violence Policy Center using federal
government statistics.
Texas, the nation's second most populous state, ranked No. 1 in each of five
categories measured:
• Highest number of gun shows (472)
• Licensed firearms retailers (6,492)
• Machine guns (18,919)
• Machine gun dealers (190)
• Firearms manufacturers (26)
California, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania all
appeared among the top 10 states in all
categories.
Arizona, Georgia and Illinois ranked in the top
10 in three of the categories.
Connecticut, Indiana, Michigan, New York,
North Carolina and Virginia placed in the top
10 in two of the categories.
However, the rankings change in some
categories when the measurements are taken
on a per-capita basis.
While Texas had the highest number of
licensed gun retailers, it didn't even place in the
top 20 on a per-capita basis. Alaska was No. 1,
with 186 retailers for every 100,000 people.
By comparison, Texas has 32.4 firearms
retailers per 100,000 population, according to
the report.
The report could provide ammunition for those
who hope to make gun control an issue in this
year's presidential race. Texas Governor
George W. Bush, the likely Republican
nominee, has generally opposed tighter
gun-control laws, while his Democratic rival,
Vice President Al Gore, supports them.
"I'm not naive, and I don't dispute the
possibility that somebody might make a
political point with the report," said Kirsten
Rand, a lobbyist for the Violence Policy
Center. "But that was not our intent."
Rand said her group only wants to provide
state residents with "a new look" at the gun
industry.
Past studies released by the Violence Policy
Center include "Guns for Felons: How the
NRA Works to Rearm Criminals"; "Unsafe in
Any Hands: Why America Needs to Ban
Handguns"; "Firearms Production in America
-- 1999 Edition"; and "Start 'Em Young -- Recruitment of Kids to the Gun
Culture."
