Texas leads nation in number of gun shows,

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Texas leads
the nation in the number of gun shows,
machine guns, licensed firearms retailers
and manufacturers, according to a
report released Wednesday by a
gun-control group.

The report, "Gunland USA," was
compiled by the Washington-based Violence Policy Center using federal
government statistics.

Texas, the nation's second most populous state, ranked No. 1 in each of five
categories measured:

• Highest number of gun shows (472)

• Licensed firearms retailers (6,492)

• Machine guns (18,919)

• Machine gun dealers (190)

• Firearms manufacturers (26)

California, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania all
appeared among the top 10 states in all
categories.

Arizona, Georgia and Illinois ranked in the top
10 in three of the categories.

Connecticut, Indiana, Michigan, New York,
North Carolina and Virginia placed in the top
10 in two of the categories.

However, the rankings change in some
categories when the measurements are taken
on a per-capita basis.

While Texas had the highest number of
licensed gun retailers, it didn't even place in the
top 20 on a per-capita basis. Alaska was No. 1,
with 186 retailers for every 100,000 people.

By comparison, Texas has 32.4 firearms
retailers per 100,000 population, according to
the report.

The report could provide ammunition for those
who hope to make gun control an issue in this
year's presidential race. Texas Governor
George W. Bush, the likely Republican
nominee, has generally opposed tighter
gun-control laws, while his Democratic rival,
Vice President Al Gore, supports them.

"I'm not naive, and I don't dispute the
possibility that somebody might make a
political point with the report," said Kirsten
Rand, a lobbyist for the Violence Policy
Center. "But that was not our intent."

Rand said her group only wants to provide
state residents with "a new look" at the gun
industry.

Past studies released by the Violence Policy
Center include "Guns for Felons: How the
NRA Works to Rearm Criminals"; "Unsafe in
Any Hands: Why America Needs to Ban
Handguns"; "Firearms Production in America
-- 1999 Edition"; and "Start 'Em Young -- Recruitment of Kids to the Gun
Culture."

Not their intent? Yeah and my a$$ is going to turn blue tomarrow and then I will fly to the moon.

Their organizational title contains the word "Violence".

Why didn't they correlate the increased per capita gun violence in those states? Probably because there was less or none.

Too embarrassing.

The New World Order has a Third Reich odor.

It is important for them to not just show the violence as the bad thing; but to focus on guns/gun shows as themselves (since they cause violence) being the bad things.

The gun banning debate will get better (for them) once the argument can fully shift away from addressing crime specifically, and right down to getting rid of gun shows/guns themselves.

Battler.

How can California be in the top 10 in all categories? Possession of class III tools by ordinary citizens is completely prohibited. The number for category 3 should be 0. Are they counting machine guns in law enforcement hands?

I can't answer that. I CAN tell you what you already know--that you and I have NO idea how their stats are compiled and would probably be severely confused by the illogic if we did know.

And I'll just bet that most Texans are terribly ashamed that their state has lots of gun shows.....but at least Illinois is up there somewhere. We must be doing something right.

Law Dog beat me to the YEEE- HAAAAW!

Here in the DFW area is gun show heaven!

I don't git no bettern' this.

i think they prove our point:

number of machine guns in texas: 18,919

now how many crimes have been committed with machine guns in texas since their invention: I would say zero, but for arguments sake, let's say.... 1.

yeah, texas is in deeeep sh*t with all those machine guns "on the street" (a phrase we will no doubt hear in the next week)

This article was nothing but part of a smear campaign on Bush. I guess there were no electric chair appointments this week. :barf:

yeah, i know the barf smiley is disabled, but I don't care :)

And who pray tell are the 26 firearms manufacturers? There are some 1911 shops and components dudes but the majors aren't here.

Wait, we have three derringer companies.

That's it!!!

Glen - I'm with you. I want to see that list of 26 manufactuers. I certainly don't want to slight any of our local boys. Keep Texas Green - buy locally!

RKBA!

Sorry LawDog. I guess you haven't heard the news yet. Ross Perot has already bought Colorado. Something was said about making it a suburb of Dallas. ;)

Having made some 30 years in Alaska (and now living in Texas) I'd guess that if you did the full auto measure on a per capita basis, Alaska would also far out rank Texas in that catagory.

And no, I never heard of a full auto being used in a felony in Alaska. It is illegal to hunt with them, but I never heard of anyone taking a bear, or other predator, in defense of life or property (which is legal) with a full auto. I did know of a couple of village National Guard types that used duty weapons and ammo to shread a young grizzly. I suspect that might have been against guard policy - but as far as I know, no legal question was raised - and these were not weapons registered to civilans.

Jim Fox

Nestor and others,

My wife and I plan to be near the snack bar at the SAXET gun show at noon on Saturday. Hope to meet some of you there.

The only legal full auto ever used in a crime after the NFA act was a total of one and that was a cop. A total of one gun in almost 70 years. The antis are trying to scare people by letting them know that there are full autos out there, what a crock. :( :(

TomMarker, well, as a matter of fact yesterday another scumbag was given the ol' "Kevorkian cocktail" up in Huntsville.

Texas, we're still #1!! :D
